Look at this extraordinarily happy cat
An orange cat lounging kind of half-sitting up like a little person, seated on my husband's leg and leaning back against his stomach as my husband sits on a gray sofa. The cat has a semi-recently shaved stomach with a healing surgical incision running down it. He looks utterly blissed out. The photo is taken from husband's POV.

Still mostly taking a social media break but we went to see the Midnight tonight and somehow I ended up with the guitar pick Tyler tossed to the audience at the end of the show and for a lot of reasons that’s kind of got me a little stunned
My fingers holding said pick, which is black and has the Midnight's logo in pink script.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Bo Burnham’s Inside again
This feeling, this steady formless feeling that hangs over everything, this untamable aimless urgency, this sense that all of this is going to burst at any moment, it just has to, it can't sustain like this, not with this much speed, not with this much force-the fear of what will happen when it ends, when it hits the brick wall. And the other fear, the deeper fear, the unspeakable fear of never hitting the wall, of this feeling never ending, never slowing down, but rising forever, like a shepherd's tone-an endless and pointless climb toward a terrible and dense Nothing.

Egg Roll got to take off The Hated Cone and he is so happy

An orange cat with a shaved tummy and a surgical incision and no cone sprawled on his back on a little house thing, only now he's got one leg all stretched out and he's twisted his body at a new angle.Yet again, an orange cat with a shaved tummy and a surgical incision and no cone sprawled on his back on a little house thing, this time with a completely new orientation and both front legs all stretched out.

I think about this essay all the time
It has also occluded something deeper. The philosopher Mark Wilson has observed that concepts often appear stable while the work they do shifts entirely as they move between domains. He calls this "wandering significance." "Decision" is wandering now. In the military context it means the system's output, a targeting nomination scored and forwarded. In journalism and tech criticism it means much the same, the thing the AI got wrong. In neither of these does it mean what it used to mean, which is a person choosing to do something for which they could be held accountable. People are still making decisions in that sense. Someone decided to compress the kill chain. Someone decided that deliberation was latency. Someone decided to build a system that produces a thousand targeting decisions per hour and call them high-quality. Someone decided to start this war. Several hundred people are sitting on Capitol Hill, refusing to stop it. Calling it an "AI problem" gives those decisions, and those people, a place to hide.

I think about this bit from @foldablehuman.bsky.social’s Line Goes Up video a lot
Cryptocurrency does nothing to address 99% of the problems with the banking industry, because those problems are patterns of human behavior. They're incentives, they're social structures, they're modalities. The problem is what people are doing to others, not that the building they're doing it in has the word "BANK" on the outside.

Speaking of which, I don’t want to presume to tell anyone else what to do with their own dang cat, but I would advise against these wormy toys, you’d probably be fine but the downside if things go bad is very big and very expensive Which is too bad because our cats adore them

I missed the news two days ago that Wendell Berry has also left us. He was one of my absolute all-time favorite poets, so let me once again post my all-time favorite of his poems, possibly the poem of my heart I have a tattoo of its final line in Latin on my arm www.context.org/iclib/ic30/b...
Ask the questions that have no answers.
Invest in the millennium. Plant sequoias.
Say that your main crop is the forest that you did not plant,
that you will not live to harvest.
Say that the leaves are harvested when they have rotted into the mold.
Call that profit. Prophesy such returns.

Put your faith in the two inches of humus that will build under the trees every thousand years.
Listen to carrion - put your ear close, and hear the faint chattering of the songs that are to come.
Expect the end of the world. Laugh.
Laughter is immeasurable. Be joyful though you have considered all the facts.“Meditare resurrectionem” in simple font on the inside of my right forearm.

It says something that Tim Curry was so great in so goddamn much stuff that I keep seeing people name roles I had kinda forgotten and them I’m like oh YEAH he was awesome in that TOO defector.com/lets-remembe...
Curry concludes the proceedings with a great villain speech about how he can't ever be truly destroyed, because darkness is what gives definition to light, and as such is "a part of you all." His performance in the scene is great: Darkness knows he's telling the truth, and seems almost to welcome what he knows will be a false defeat. It's a perfect setup for what happens next, when he is vanquished-and proven right, by everyone in the audience immediately experiencing a moment of thinking, Shit, I want him back.

This piece is excellent, one of the clearest explanations I’ve seen After 2008 I became sort of obsessed with learning about exactly how everything fell apart. I didn’t know I’d get to see an exact replay two fucking decades later
The take-or-pay compute contract - the instrument at the center of the Al build-out has a structural feature that almost no one prices: its payments do not begin at signing. They begin at delivery. A lab signs a multi-year capacity commitment today, but the payments do not start until the data center is energized, the capacity is accepted, and the contractual ramp schedule commences - an interval set not by finance, but by construction: siting, powering, and filling a gigawatt-scale campus takes 24-to-36 months from signature - mirroring the two-to-three-year teaser of a subprime ARM.

I’m recording a podcast in October on House of Leaves so I’m making notes as I reread (Please do not answer any of these questions or offer your own interpretation, I’m serious, please refrain, this is not an invitation to discussion, I am merely sharing my flailing)
- Puzzle box reading? Paranoia-Exit 8.
Spiraling. You notice what looks like a misspelling or a continuity error—is it really an error or something
meaningful? Who is the author of the error? Backrooms/Kane Parsons. Is this how you get Jarhead sequels? People read the Bible this way and look where that gets us. QAnon baking the breadcrumbs but none of it ever meant anything concrete or real. What IS REAL? Real is a desert. This book breaks my brain. I sit here making notes and going in a spiral and eventually I just want to lie on the patio and feel the warm flagstones on my cheek
- Anyway, what's the deal with Johnny's
"of" vs "have". Is that characterization?
Is it a code? There isn't enough grass to touch in the world

JOSHUA BASCHE: It'd be these long takes of them just sitting there reading a teleprompter as lines came up. It was towards the end of the day, and you could kind of tell Curry was tired, he wanted to get out of there. But then that line comes up. And you saw the smile pop onto his face when he read it through first. The first take was that take.

Spoiler kinda for what’s actually going on but whatever
"What's wrong with you?"

The demon gives him a thin, pained smile. When it speaks again, it does so in a dry croak. A dying voice. "Don't have your constitution. Being in this goddamn maze is bad for me. We don't have a lot of time left. Or I don't."

Jacob hunches forward, leans his chin on his folded hands. It's as though there's one weariness in this room, shared between the two of them.

"What happens when we run out of it?"

"For you, it doesn't end. It just keeps on going." Another flicker of a smile. "That's the hell of it, you see. You've been in the middle of it for years. You know exactly where it started. You know so much more than you've ever let yourself know. You know that you aren't the only one who's been suffering. How many people have you seen, going through the exact same Hell? How many people have you put there? Kept there? All in the name of saving them. For your... your fucking fascist God."

A hint of contempt, in those last words. A curl of its lips, not quite making it all the way to a sneer. Exhausted anger more than anything else. And still that terrible sadness.

(2) Encouraging Destructiveness
It should be pointed out to the saboteur where the circumstances are suitable, that he is acting in self-defense against the enemy, or retaliating against the enemy for other acts of destruction. A reasonable amount of humor in the presentation of suggestlons for simple sabotage will relax tensions of fear.

(a) The saboteur may have to reverse his thinking, and he should be told this in so many words. Where he formerly thought of keeping his tools sharp, he should now let them grow dull; surfaces formerly were lubricated now should be sanded; normally diligent, he should now be lazy and careless; and so on. Once he is encouraged to think backwards about himself and the objects of his everyday life, the saboteur will see many opportunities in his immediate environment which cannot possibly be seen from a distance. A state of mind should be encouraged that anything can be sabotaged.

Be a Laurie. I think Laurie is probably sleeping pretty dang well at night
As the flight neared final boarding, another ICE officer accused Laurie of interfering with the operation and pressed her to help locate the passenger. Laurie declined to say whether the woman was on the flight's passenger list and told the officer he would need to contact the airline's corporate security department for information. "You're going to need a subpoena," she said. No arrests were made at the gate that day.

The next day, the passenger called her.
She had made it home. And she was with her child.

This partially inspired by HBomberguy successfully ragebaiting me with his Letterboxd review of the Backrooms movie, which—Okay, I don’t think it’s wall to wall lazy bad takes although I do not agree with it, but in particular And like Harry. Harris. Harrison Elizabeth Bomberguy.
When people praise this movie they keep saying things like "it's about trauma," and it is, but what exactly did it say about trauma, other than it's, well, traumatic? In The Babadook, you see characters approach and process their trauma, and come out the other side having changed. In Backrooms, you get flashbacks to Mary's traumatic childhood, and then the movie just sort of continues. Like, I get it, the backrooms are like being locked in your house by your mother, but that doesn't give me anything new to think about. You're not taking the idea any further than a family guy sketch. Boy, this infinite hallway reminds me of how I never finished college!
