Darling is fascinating in the second game, I'm glad they explored him through this other lens. I love that there's enough references there to Trench that like... clearly Darling understands the stakes, he has a good handle on how completely insane the world can be and what might be coming.

So when I look at AI art I feel that. Its someone who has mistaken where the value in creative work lies. When they see an image, they can /only/ see the image. They can't imagine, or maybe haven't been taught to imagine, everything else.

The image, in a lot of ways, is just a tool to make the process happen. Like, it's a basket in a basketball game. Sure, it's the "goal", but when you play basketball the thing you're actually doing, the thing that's giving you meaning is everything up to the point the ball goes in the basket!

And at no point do they offer anything underneath their language. There is no glorious challenging feeling that the AI is desperately trying to contain in letters. All it ever is, is the letters. I think that's why all AI output feels so absent to me, maybe. There is nothing beyond the output.

LLMs by definition do not have this. They operate entirely off of language. They take in the language you give them, and they assemble language in response to that. At no point do they perceive (or try to perceive) the feelings underneath the language - all of the stuff you failed to describe.

Thinking about AI again, and something key to me is that all it has is language and prediction. To me, part of the conscious experience is seeing something that /defies/ language. Seeing something, or feeling something that moves you in a way that you lack the tools to explain.
