I wrote the cover story for the new issue of MOJO about Rolling Thunder 1976! I listened to the full box set (yes, all 39 discs) and interviewed a bunch of participants. 'Nashville Skyline' is the unique situation when Bob Dylan acts like it's perfectly normal that his new LP is a wildly horny 28-minute Country & Western album wherein he sings like a particularly hash-drunk Dean Martin. Eventually, we agree that it's utterly flawless. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZhL...

Saw Bill Callahan (aka Smog) at The Roundhouse in London last night. Played a lot of material from his new album, which all sounded really good. Superb band, including the phenomenal (and delightfully showy) drumming of Jim White.

SPOILER Aside from Dylan, David Bowie is their other love. The penny drops about the altered future when the broadcast that once showed Space Oddity now features a nasty glam fascist singing about marching in time (written and performed for the film by Neil Hannon).

"He speaks of freedom and heartbreak and a nation lost. And of the joy and pain of the authentic soul." All while looking at a still of Dylan performing at Newport '64. Of course, the ensuing time meddling that inevitably occurs erases Dylan from the timeline. D'oh.

Watched a really smart sci-fi film called Lola. Two sisters in wartime Britain build a machine that picks up TV and radio broadcasts from the future, including lots of music At one point, one woman says that Bob Dylan is her favourite future musician and I like how she describes him...

Other Side is basically just about Dylan, this new film is about the wider festival with Dylan as part of the story. It's like Lerner's Festival but with more context and narrative - and mostly completely different footage. The three films make for a brilliant trilogy.

Newport and the Great Folk Dream + Q&A with Joe Boyd
Before Coachella and Woodstock, there was Newport.

Dylan fans will probably be familiar with the Newport narrative of an acoustic ideal destroyed by the squeals of commercialism. But Newport and the Great Folk Dream is like revisiting that always-compelling story through the fresh perspective of the new footage.

But as with the previous films, the real joy is in the lesser-known acts, who play banjos, chop wood, bang tables and make all kinds of weird and wonderful noises. Or seeing Howlin’ Wolf jump into the crowd and dance like a maniac. 📷 Joe Alper

I've watched Lerner’s Festival and The Other Side of the Mirror multiple times, but was astonished by how much new material this new film has. It features so many great performances from people like John Lee Hooker, Dave Van Ronk, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez and of course Bob Dylan.

Just watched a preview of a new documentary about the Newport Folk Festival, which has its UK premiere at London's BFI IMAX on Oct 29th as part of this year's Doc'n'Roll Festival. Newport and the Great Foik Dream unearths amazing unseen footage from the vaults of filmmaker Murray Lerner. 🧵

Another gem from the Royal Festival Hall '64 programme, which included Dylan's autobiographical poem, My Life in a Stolen Moment. This was originally written for the 1963 Town Hall show in NYC. Naturally, it's a delightful mix of truth and legend.

Back to the With God On Our Side cover - looks like Chris Thile is a big Dylan fan. Has covered a few of his songs in live sets - Don't Think Twice, Country Pie, Masters of War and a fun version of Subterranean Homesick Blues.

I love the dub vibes of her take on The Human League's Don't You Want Baby, which has (Dylan connection alert) Cat Power on guest vocals. It looks like Ndegeocello's album also includes a cover of Dylan's It Ain't Me Babe. But that's not available yet. 📷 Mathieu Zazzo

With God On Our Side is a huge contrast to the other available songs from Ndegeocello's forthcoming new album. Couldn't be further from the assertive funk of her cover of Don't Look Any Further, with British soul singer Lianne La Havas.

Meshell Ndegeocello has a new cover of Bob Dylan's With God On Our Side with Bill Callahan (aka Smog) on main vocals. Ndegeocello's abrasive arrangement features scratchy mandolin from Chris Thile, plaintive piano and machine-gun drum machine. Worth a listen.

I agree that artists are "constantly in a state of becoming," but I also believe that the most commercial artists either start as brands or end up as brands and are truly no longer artists of in flux at all. Perhaps if Warhol were alive, he'd make prints of pop stars.

Stagnant ponds, if we want to bring it back to the river analogy. You may be right but Dylan has gone out of his way to avoid that brand trap by consistently refusing to conform to “customer” expectations.

Extract from the wonderful Is a River Alive? by @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social. I like how his summary of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's writing about a river - "It is always in a state of becoming" - echoes one of my favourite Bob Dylan quotes: that an artist is "constantly in a state of becoming".
