i led a deep listening hike this morning, threaded through with sonic meditations from pauline oliveros. at the end, one of the participants said he heard the sound of a single pine needle hitting the ground for the very first time. maybe one of the best compliments i’ve received as an educator 🥹

this article is a few things: it outlines what i mean by palliative political ecology; it's processing grief through writing (and sharing it); and it's an attempt to write in a way that ai cannot (easily) replicate. i am proud to share it! liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/10.3828/...

faculty and staff need to organize alongside their students, pushing universities from the inside to address the structural conditions shaping the student debt crisis. this includes, at the very least, confronting the fact that our livelihoods are inextricably linked to exploitative debt relations.

new! this article is the result of several conversations, tons of effort and time, and deep reflections about my-and our-relationship to the political economy of higher ed. student debt shouldn't exist, and college should be free ✊ @dialogueshg.bsky.social journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

saw the new tron, and my takeaway is that ai-death likely won’t be explosive and shiny. instead, it’ll be slow violence. enough humans will be convinced its existence is more worthwhile than planetary health (happening), and ai chat bots will convince kids to kill themselves (happening).

i am also trying to write in ways that cannot be easily replicated by AI (e.g., AI can't know what it feels like to lose a mom). i am affirming that writing about difficult topics is still possible and important. i need to know it is. i haven't quite figured out this writing yet, but working on it!

this is also the most personal thing i've written, and i am inspired by so many incredible writers that have been able to seamlessly blend the personal and academic through auto-theory, etc. this is the first of a few pieces that intersects palliative care and climate/energy justice work.

this piece puts into words much of what i've felt while processing the death of the person who loved me most in this world. it's a jumping off point for me to begin articulating what i see as 'palliative political ecology.' what are the socioecological politics of easing planetary suffering?

dylan m. harris @dylanmharris.bsky.social · 03/09/2025
what does it meant to affirm life, to ease suffering, when there is no cure? what does grief teach about the art of life, about solidarity despite devastation? is grief a lens through which to assuage planetary harm? thanks to the @carsoncenter.bsky.social 🌱 seeingthewoods.org/2025/09/02/l...

research funding cuts will impact whole universities, but, importantly, those costs are going to be passed onto our most vulnerable colleagues and our students through tuition increases. it's time to organize WITH - not against - your students to fight these cuts. ✊ @debtcollective.bsky.social

i think a lot about the 'point' of my work, and, within a broader context of the neoliberalization of what i 'offer' to society, today affirmed that what i am 'good at' may just simply be holding space for my students to think and feel out loud. today, against it all, that felt truer than ever.
030
dylan m. harris @dylanmharris.bsky.social · 29/01/2025
today, our discussion was set against the backdrop of a whirlwind of realtime texts and notifications - this grant is frozen, this policy will impact these students in material ways, a judge blocked this or that temporarily - and the power of 'us' and 'them' thinking was so powerfully on display.

my nature/society course, at its heart, is about understanding how the seemingly intractable, primordial division between humans and nature informs so much of the binary thinking that informs (and inflames) so much of society.

while the end of the semester is always busy, it is my favorite for final projects, which, this year, have included: a personal piano concert of studio ghibli songs, a handmade bleaching coral reef made from recycled fabric, and a student writing a poem they yodeled from a mountain top on video 😀

Staggering growth of US oil & gas production and record profits was sold by GOP and Dem presidents as American “energy security”. But this isn’t security for ordinary people. Dividends flow to the 1% as more households struggle with utility bills. New paper by @isabellamweber.bsky.social + coauthors

by centering storylines that are drawn specifically from our collective understanding of climate justice work, we hope to expand the small window of possibility afforded by metrics like SSCPs and RCPs... there is so much more to an equitable future than a line on a graph.

how and why 'human activity' is factored into climate models, often as a flattened variable among many other variables, is not consistent with climate justice literature that highlights the unequal contributions to and disproportionate impact from climate change. stories help make sense of this!

finally, we are witnessing the horrendous outcome of settler capitalist development, seeing settlers gnash their teeth at the destruction of a state, of the palestinian people, who refuse to give in. the struggle, and the possibility in it, is why capitalism will never win. ✊

considering climate change, and all the disaster capitalist 'opportunities' it entails (e.g., socioecological fixes), you can see how ruins are created through capitalist production, exploited as a wasteland, only to be re-circulated as a commodity. and yet, it's never complete.
