Conservation work is hard. It lurches and retracts and moves incrementally if at all- but it's worth the fight every day.

At its core, this isn't even about how we are mandated to fund state schools with timber sales. Washibgtons whole tax structure and funding model needs an overhaul. This is simply a symptom. The sooner environment realize that, the sooner we get to real change

A lot of no-cut enviros are super mad at Dave for going backwards here, but the truth is that he overpromised on his ability to manifest changes within the state structure and systems. That doesnt make him a hypocrite, it's just slow, hard work that takes all of us pushing together with realism

There's something deeply depressing about listening to this in the same decade where virtual fence technology presents an opportunity to de-fence much of the cattle grazing west. One step forward, two horrific steps back or something

James' coverage here is great- and it brought me a new way of thinking about Roadless areas and their value as places free from the capitalist exploitation as a rarity in world. if you want a solid resource page about the roadless rule and the landscapes at risk, I personally like: roadless.org

I have thoughts about the Roadless repeal. Mostly that this conversation is completely detached from realities of timber production, healthy forests, or fire resilient communities

I'm thankful James came up here, but really humbled he took the time to get out of Spokane itself to connect with our rural and Tribal neighbors waging their own battles this fire season and demonstrating their own response and aid efforts.

CALfire doesn't play. That's not an insult or compliment, but an assessment of their approach. They lock on to the assigned objective and blast clean through it, with little concern for how people feel about it. Good for putting down a fire, bad for the gentler aspects of how that impacts community

And then the Tribes. Fighting so hard for their community for weeks before this. Demonstrating real community and self-reliance while being ignored by so much media. Inter-tribal solidarity with no regard for existing disagreements. It's beautiful and heart wrenching

And I keep crying randomly and just trying to stay busy. I've talked about my inlaws house...then remember it's not there, like accidentally deadnaming someone. Former old co-workers I haven't seen in years who lived in the hardest hit neighborhood, knowing the outcome without the heart to call.

So far, our house stands. But we simply ended up on the right side of the fire line that bisected our community. Like a fucked up lottery, half our social circle ended up homeless. The kids don't really understand. My son just wants to buy his friends new Pokemon cards to make it better. Gutted.

Nobody reads what I write anyways so: next weekend we're supposed to attend a kids birthday with daycare folks. That family just lost everything in Spokane fires. They want to keep the party for the kids. I'm going to be crying and consoling other parents in the corner at a 4 y/o's party.

Tough part here with CWD is that all the places that used to collect roadkill and process for food insecure families had to shut those programs down. Can't store it long enough for negative tests and keep it all separated and cataloged. Just back to roadkill= net loss, instead of salvage too often

dwilsoutside.bsky.social @dwilsoutside.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Yeah the first positive was about 2 miles away. The sample was super hot from an unknown mortality deer, so probably died from long-term cwd. Added issue to how long it was shedding is that it is a super suburban area- lots of close-in deer and no capability to cull the area....it's here to stay
000
dwilsoutside.bsky.social @dwilsoutside.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Didn't think you had cwd yet (congrats). But that's a good strategy to require salvage testing- increases sample size/catchment to make sure you can catch and contain if a positive does pop. Are all hunters required to submit too? WA only has to submit in the eastern part where we had positive tests

We have predators, but they don't "manage" prey the way people think. Check out Royal Isle moose- hard pendulum swings, especially with hands-off pred managment. I'm good with preds, but controlled management by humans is much more targeted and scientifically informed by carrying capacity goals

dwilsoutside.bsky.social @dwilsoutside.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I'm in WA and had no idea your Eastern whitetails were that low, they are def outcompeting our muleys up here. But WT susceptibility to disease, drought and winterkill brings hard crashes more frequently. Very boom/bust, but busts are happening often and with lower booms between them. Bad trend

One unique data I saw was about the recruitment impacts of edge-edge farming and other practices that diminish cover during birthing and fawning. They actually produce fewer fawns without that cover available, in addition to increased fawn mortality. Just one piece of the muley decline puzzle

I'm going to respectfully ask you to not do this here. This is very devastating, with multiple homes lost and a significant portion evac'ed and displaced. Your comment here neither reaches the cause of your ire or helps those impacted. This punching down on a community in crisis.

That's not my graphic and I'm not a part of the Tribes official relief program. I'm just trying to get supplies where they need to go. That said, considering it's the largest fire in the west in less than 9 days and that their government building is surrounded by fire-might've limited their options

When the forest Service implemented the 10 AM Rule in the 1930s, it was a well-intentioned response built out of ignorance for fire regimes and forest ecosystems. Our current fire severity is heavily informed by decades of that bad policy. Bringing it back now isn't ignorance, it's abject stupidity

USFS can’t maintain the roads it already has with its budget and existing backlog. Adding more roads just adds cost and risk without a safety ROI. Instead it just gets us damage to ecosystems, loss of clean water, and reduced snowpacks. just a bad idea so do something about it. call your senator pls

dwilsoutside.bsky.social @dwilsoutside.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
The timber argument fails. Roadless areas are far from mills, on steep terrain, with expensive road needs. Add fuel, labor, equipment, and market pressures, and it’s not profitable. Mills won’t chase bad wood when the front‑country supply is strong. Mills don't jump over dimes to make a nickel (4/5)

dwilsoutside.bsky.social @dwilsoutside.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
stuffing this nullification into a “wildfire prevention” bill is laughable since most human‑caused wildfires start close to roads. Opening new road corridors would actually add ignition sources, driving up wildfire response costs, and putting forests at greater risk. (3/5)

Americans broadly and vocally rejected Sen. Mike Lee’s public lands sell off in the OBBA. Now Sen. Daines (MT) is giving him another shot to pillage our lands by nullifying the roadless rule via a bill that'll be heard on 6/10. Here’s what to do about it right now, and what you can say: (1/5)

Candidly, Washington State jumped the shark on gun control bills a couple years ago- this is just following that trend to its next logical conclusion. Quantity over quality is my home state's only approach to gun laws, and often without any concern for "unintended" (totally known) consequences

Obviously, the right's "2A to stop tyranny" has and will always be performative. The question now that tyranny has come and started murdering the lawful left is how those 2A folks will respond. Because comply or die is quickly becoming the binary option being forced onto them.
