Erin’s post with the false quote: Xavier Becerra, candidate for governor. In a May interview, argued that nothing in the Constitution entitles transgender people to play sports, and that if “rules don’t let you play a sport because of who you are,” that is acceptable. This is the position the Supreme Court ultimately took.

Faced with West’s refusal to get an abortion, Gilkar and Ahmed were determined to raise the baby and provide for his specialized medical care, but no hospital in Alaska was equipped to handle the surgeries the baby would need. After consulting with doctors in their home state of California, Gilkar and Ahmed decided that West should give birth there. They filed a new petition in a California state court, which on June 22 recognized Gilkar and Ahmed as parents of the unborn child.

He was specifically asked about her.
Dasha Burns: So I talked to, former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene on this podcast in April, and it’s kinda remarkable how similar some of your positions are. Like she also has condemned AIPAC’s influence in politics, called for no more US taxpayer dollars to Israel, said that the cost of health insurance needs to go down. Do you think you could build this new coalition with people like MTG?

Abdul El-Sayed: Look, she said a lot of things I disagree with, too. I’ll just say this, that I wouldn’t be surprised, right...when you ask me about why the establishment elite Democrats are so worried about me, it’s because there are a lot of people who listen to her who are going to vote for me in the general election. They are not afraid I’m going to lose. They’re afraid I’m going to win. And at the end of the day, we get so polarized about D versus R or red versus blue that we forget that when you talk about the things that people actually care about, you can win elections. You can do that in uncommon ways. But too often, the Democratic Party is more interested in continuing to take money from its corporate and special interest donors than it is in speaking conventional truth.

It should be an obvious thing that everybody agrees with that we should keep our money here. It should be an obvious thing that everybody agrees with that people shouldn’t go into medical debt in the richest, most powerful country in the world. The fact that MTG agrees with those points should not be all that uncommon ‘cause they’re just like obvious things to say. And the fact that neither party is willing to say that is a reflection of the amount of money both parties take from the corporations and the special interests who in effect buy them off to be able to say that.

I’m sad. Not for him, but for the rest of us because of what he did. And also for who he could have been. He saw Trump for what he was in 2016 but he sold out everything for power. In another life, he could have done so much good. Like maybe if McCain had survived in office until 2021.
“People try to analyze Lindsey through the prism of the manifest inconsistencies that exist between things he used to believe and what he’s doing now,“ Schmidt says. “The way to understand him is to look at what’s consistent. And essentially what he is in American politics is what, in the aquatic world, would be a pilotfish: a smaller fish that hovers about a larger predator, like a shark, living off of its detritus. That’s Lindsey. And when he swim around the McCain shark, broadly view as a virtuous and good shark, Lindsey took on the patina of virtue. But wherever the apex shark is, you find the Lindsey fish hovering about, and Trump‘s the newest shark in the sea. Lindsey has a real draw to power – Lindsey found it unattainable on his own merits.

O, let America be America again—
The land that never has been yet—
and yet must be—the land where every man is free.
The land that’s mine—the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME—
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose—
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people’s lives,
We must take back our land again.
America!

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America was never America to me,
And yet I swear this oath—
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain—
All, all the stretch of these great green states—
and make America again!

Duart Castle. It’s the historic castle of Clan Maclean on the Isle of Mull, and it’s up on a crag with a view of the Sound of Mull and the Scottish mainland. I like to imagine some Maclean ancestor of mine looking out from it and thinking “yeah, this place rules.”
Duart Castle is a historic fortress on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, and the ancestral seat of Clan Maclean, dominating the Sound of Mull with its strategic cliffside location. With origins in the 13th century, it features a 13th-century keep, dungeons, and Edwardian state rooms, and was restored in the 20th century after falling into ruin. Today, it's a popular visitor attraction with a tearoom, gift shop, and stunning views, open seasonally to the public.

Very healthy society over there. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/m...
The attack on the Bani Odeh family brought the number of Palestinians killed to 11. Two brothers survived the shooting. Khaled, 11, the oldest of the siblings, said he had heard his mother crying and his father praying before they died.

After the gunfire stopped, Israeli border police dragged him out of the wreckage, taunted him about the murders of his family and attacked him. One of the Israelis said “we killed dogs”, he told Reuters.

The family had been in the nearby city of Nablus to buy clothes for the upcoming Eid festival, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Families often stay up late in a month when adults fast during daylight hours.

“What did this family do? They went to buy Eid necessities, and to put a smile on those children’s faces,” said Mansour Abu Islam, a neighbour and cousin of Ali. “This is clear evidence that Palestinian lives have no value.”

NYT article from 1976. I never knew about this.
Carter never supported Lieutenant Calley directly, but he proclaimed an “American Fighting Men's Day,” attacked those who he said were using “these events” to cheapen and shame servicemen and to shake the confidence of citizens in their own country. He did not condemn Lieutenant Calley, whom he called a scapegoat.

There is no reason to think that Mr. Carter, himself once a professional military officer, ever felt any sympathy for Lieutenant Calley, or that he did not, as he says now, feel “abhorrence” for the young officer.

Mr. Carter says now he acted to draw a distinction between honorable, blameless fighting men and Lieutenant Galley. The act could be read, however, as an attempt then to quiet the passions and retain the support of enraged conservatives, largely white, among Governor Carter's constituency; just as his more recent remarks could be seen as an attempt to appeal to a larger constituency today. Because motives can never be easily proved much will depend on the judgment of voters, which Mr. Carter says he respects.
