As someone who lives in Missouri, the people of this state have zero capacity to hold their elected representatives accountable. The people frequently vote for decent policies and then also vote for the very people who undermine those policies. It’s maddening.

Reading straight through the entire manuscript this week—probably for the first time—brought home to me how much this book is really an extension of my previous work. Bultmann’s demythologizing is a structural principle. My work on boundary making and orthodoxy is a thematic throughline.

I haven't seen the film. This means I cannot confidently assess its editing, corroboration, or the full testimony it presents. I would love to live in a world in which I could wait, watch the movie, and have a sober debate about its claims.
Unfortunately, the discourse online is not so patient. That's why it's necessary to examine the argument its makers have published, the reporting on which it builds, and the standards by which its allegations should be judged. The film falls short on every dimension.

I was fascinated at the ideological incoherence of the messaging. Claiming the legacy of Eisenhower and Reagan for Trump's policies was bizarre, to say the least. Tariffs only came up once but even that was halfhearted. The crowd loved every anti-immigrant comment. That's probably the main takeaway.

Except for the prayer, it was more of a "White pride" rally than a "Christian nationalist" rally. Race was a more salient glue than religion—though religion was certainly not absent. It appeared heavily in Vance's address, as one would expect. The prayer was exactly what you would expect in church.

Overall, the rally was an eye-opening experience for me. Perhaps because it was held at noon on Monday, the crowd was pretty evenly split between men and women. It was, obviously, a blindingly White crowd—but not exclusively so. There was an AAPI man in front of me and two AAPI women on my right.
