📝 Menopause HRT cuts women’s dementia risk – but only if it’s started early enough. Women who take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are less likely to get Alzheimer’s disease, a study of more than 180,000 UK Biobank participants has revealed. Prof Anne Marie Minihane, @uniofeastanglia.bsky.social
"I think [our research] does add to the evidence that the benefits of HRT seem to outweigh the risks – and the importance of starting early.” Professor Anne Marie Minihane, University of East Anglia

Led by Prof Anne-Marie Minihane, Director of the Norwich Institute for Healthy Ageing, the research suggests that HRT could have protective benefits for some groups, highlighting the potential for more personalised approaches to prevention. @healthuea.bsky.social @ueamedical.bsky.social

Dr David Vauzour, from @ueamedical.bsky.social has been the lead researcher on a study that has found that a blood test could help identify people at higher risk of cognitive decline years before a traditional diagnosis is possible. Read more: bit.ly/4v12Wz6 #BloodTest #ResearchMatters

What if a simple blood test could help detect early cognitive decline? Our latest study shows that microbe-derived metabolites shaped by the gut microbiome can distinguish early-stage cognitive impairment with promising accuracy.

Toxin in blood of kidney disease patients could contribute to stroke risk, study suggests
Scientists have revealed that a toxin found in the blood of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) damages the body’s protective blood–brain barrier, likely contributing to the risk of stroke.
