It's a phenomenal RE adaptation, idk what people are complaining about.

Admittedly this is exactly how I've ended multiple games so I can't complain too loudly hahahaha Overall still a great movie regardless.

I actually think if the film hasn't made some vague gestures at a character arc the ending would have landed better for me, but it sort of tried to have a character arc and then didn't really use it so the whole thing came across as abrupt and unfinished to me.

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I think for me it wasn't how it ended so much as that it didn't feel narratively motivated. It didn't feel like the culmination of the character's journey in any way, it just kind of happened.

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Yes, actually. It's INCREDIBLY faithful to the spirit and structure of RE, even when it's to its detriment as a film, and I have to love it for that.

I think one of my favorites was actually the dog running at him from out of the darkness. It's such a little thing but it's such a well done "oh... OH" moment.
110
David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
It had some genuinely hilarious bits. Quite a few actually. And the parts where something is both a punchline and a horror moment were phenomenal. Even when it was small stuff like how something runs into the shot etc

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I don't know for sure but I kind of wonder if the instinct to land a narrative punchline at the expense of the audience is sort of what let it down. The ending is a sort of punchline but it feels unsatisfying for that to top off an entire film narrative.

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
It was still good yeah, it's just that the first half was SO GOOD

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I don't really have a conclusion to draw from that, I just think it's neat. Makes me feel like we got to be part of a larger conversation that's happening, if that makes sense.

Oh also I might be crazy but I feel like the Resident Evil movie was incredibly similar to Iron Lung in a bunch of ways. Especially the pacing and narrative structure. And I think it had similar strengths and weaknesses.

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Yup lol Nothing could be more faithful to RE than having a generationally good first half followed by a perfectly fine second half

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
BUT... all that aside, that's easily the best Resident Evil film ever made and in the running for the best videogame movie ever made. As with Barbarian, the stuff that doesn't work hurts more because of how incredible the stuff that does work is. Overall a great experience.

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I also think it botched the landing. The concept of the ending is fine but it didn't come together narratively for me at all, and felt like they just ran out of runtime and had to wrap everything up quickly.
3420
David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
The second half had quite a few good scenes but overall lost momentum and felt like it didn't manage to keep narratively/dramatically building. I actually think it should have let itself go crazier, and had fully committed to outright chaos.

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
So having seen Barbarian, Resident Evil was exactly what I expected, in that the first half is utterly immaculate and the second half is... good. It's fine. And then at a random point they run out of script and the movie ends. Overall pretty great but definitely lopsided.

I mean it's probably good, I have no idea! I haven't played any of them other than a few hours of CoD4. It's more just how weird it is to see the general perception of the people around you shift without you noticing.

The problem is that I'm old enough to remember this meme being current I've never known a world where Call of Duty wasn't the dumb mainstream FPS for kids lol. It's like fundamental programming from the golden era of panicked PC elitism.

I recently saw one of those "back when gaming was good" videos and the game they were pining for was Advanced fucking Warfare. My only solace is eventually they'll have to deal with kids being like "yeah Call of Duty 4:2:II was so much better than Call of Duty 4: VI - Modern Warfare Remaster 3"

Gonna go see the new Resident Evil movie today. Of course it won't be a TRUE Resident Evil movie without Alice, but I'll make do.

That was one of them, and I genuinely would have never gotten that on my own because I have no idea what most of the enemies are called.

It's really weird because most of the puzzles/progression are quite simple, but then every once in awhile they throw in something bonkers.

I'm playing through Link's Awakening for the first time (the gbc version) and while I'm ashamed to admit that I've given in and looked at a walkthrough a few times, almost every time I've been like "oh, I never would have figured that out"

To be fair I don't actually know how durable it is/isn't, but it's light as a feather and I had to rebend the plastic to get the battery door to stay shut so it seems cheap in my mind. And now they don't make them anymore :(

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I get why they usually make these handhelds pretty general purpose but a Miyoo Mini with no shoulder buttons, a 1x1 screen, and a more durable shell would be like absolute perfection as a gb/gbc emulator. Miyoo Mini is very close but I'm always worried about accidentally breaking it.

I've heard the gkd pixel 2 has a really good sleep feature, so that might end up being my go to because of the metal build, but I've had no luck transferring save states over so I need to finish Link's Awakening on the Mini first.

David Szymanski @duskdev.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I have some minor problems with the Miyoo Mini (mine is ver2 iirc), but it's really hard to argue with OnionOS and its quick boot up time + autosave/autoload feature. Makes it one of the most usable pocket handhelds I own, so long as you don't need the shoulder buttons.

I know there's an updated better model too, but I just can't resist the blocky look of this one, plus the cool metal back.

By all accounts this thing is outdated, underpowered, and has a poor battery life, but I really wanted one anyway. It just looks so cool, and it's probably about the thinnest emulation handheld you can buy. I'll probably use it mostly for gb/gbc (TrimUI Model S)

I hear the Hellraiser game is looking pretty good? I haven't played the demo since I'm already planning on buying the full thing, so long as it's not completely borked on release.

It's a movie where nothing is motivated by the narrative or by being entertaining, it's all motivated by what scenes Rob Zombie wanted to film and what he wanted to act out via his and his wife's self inserts.

The first 15-ish minutes however are phenomenal. It almost feels like a deliberate slap in the face. But then it's just like... weird character retcons, meaningless scenes, and lots of murders that are low on spectacle and high on prolonged emotional suffering.
