Yeah, the £1m limit would have caught a lot but since they backtracked that up to £2.5m and made that a transferable allowance most farms will be completely exempt. Older farmers just didn't have to ever worry about it when it was an exempt asset.
010 1
alt-DUP @duponline.eurosky.social · 9h
Up until last year IHT wasn't charged on agricultural assets at all, that's why people like Clarkson and Dyson bought up farmland, which was exempt. In Dyson's case it would potentially save him over a billion in IHT compared to non-exempt assets.

The farmers have enjoyed over £5m extra allowances and still paid less tax than your estate. Carla still thinks that's unfair to the farmers. What do you think?
220 2
alt-DUP @duponline.eurosky.social · 9h
So if your estate is £1.2m when the last of you or your spouse dies, IHT would be £80k, leaving £1,120,000. If the last of a farmer or their spouse dies, and the farm total estate is £6.2m, £5.2m of which is the farm, only £40k IHT is payable, leaving £6,160,000.
100 1
alt-DUP @duponline.eurosky.social · 9h
Well on top of that £500k each they get an additional, wait for it £2.5m allowance each for agricultural assets, and that's also transferable between spouses, so would cover a farm tax free up to £5m. Above that tax is charged at ½ the rate you or I would pay, 20% instead of 40%.
100 1
alt-DUP @duponline.eurosky.social · 9h
A married ouple gets twice that, so £1 million in total, as the allowances are transferable. Above that 40% tax is charged on the excess. Pretty generous. So how is it different for farmers?
100 1
alt-DUP @duponline.eurosky.social · 9h
Inheritince Tax is a tax charged after death on someone's estate. Hardly anyone pays it (only about 4%of estates are liable to it) as almost all estates are well below the tax free allowances. Non farmer individuals get £325k allowance + an extra £175k on their main residence, so £500k.

Lockhart is at her work again. She implying farmers get a bad deal on inheritance tax but what she's actually doing is complaining already the already generous special treatment they enjoy isn't generous enough. Let me explain why she couldn't be more wrong.

Ulster Day was a month ago. Flags and banners are seldom removed, instead allowed to rot every year. It's clear those putting them up have no respect for the flags, they're put up simply to territory-mark and intimidate.

As we all know, that wee lad would be the first person in the queue looking to blame the police and an infinitely long list of everyone else if the march had happened and terrorists shot someone.

alt-DUP @duponline.eurosky.social · 15h
I don't know how anyone can read something like this and still come to the concussion that it's a good idea to send a parade down the road. That's not a vindication of terrorists, it's proof that the police decision not to facilitate the march in the interests of public safety was correct.

And the DUP and SF simply can't work together. The present structure of Stormont allows their respective SpAds carve up what they can between them behind the scenes. The bits they can't agree on they have an effective veto to block. Hence NI sees must less legislation passed than other Assemblies.

Precisely. The PC got caught slacking in their deliberation this year on Drumcree, which left an open goal for the legal challenge. The PC then caved when they should have resigned, gifting us all the consequences.

I'm not a Unionist but there's no way Diane Forsythe knows what the majority of Unionists think on anything, or speaks for them. There's a likelihood the majority would rather not have an SF First Minister but that's not the same as whether they think she should resign as FM over Garvaghy Rd.

David Graham has an idiotic article in the Bel Tel this morning. He suggests Big Gav should step down in East Belfast so that he can enter the Assembly as an MLA instead, with Emma Little-Pengelly running for his Westminster seat. All this would be to somehow help retain Carla Lockhart.

It's been his go to argument for a couple of years. And he thinks people in NI are driving to hotels in RoI instead (presumably on free fuel) because he says the higher VAT rate here makes hotel stays more expensive. And yet all the Galgorm Group hotels are always busy. Something doesn't add up.

It's also been estimated that this would lead to £300m less VAT being collected and HMRC therefore knocking £300m a year off NI's block grant. Which services are you going to cut so everyone who can afford it gets the equivalent of £5 off a £100 meal?

I also think she's daring the party to throw her out, which I don't think they'll do. But not doing so appears weak, so it's jeopardy either way for the party. Being thrown out also makes a move to TUV easier, the narrative would be that the DUP pushed her rather than her being disloyal.

Hospitality Ulster are on the radio about reducing VAT on hospitality businesses (excl alcohol) to 10% spouting the usual lie that NI hospitality businesses are losing business to RoI where the VAT rate is lower. There are several flaws in this argument, including actual data.

The statement seems to have changed the issue she's taking a stand on from the Orange march to the illegality of reps protesting but surely that's a matter for the police and the courts. Conclusion: she's no longer following party policy on the Drumcree issue and is aligned with the TUV.
