INS can issue administrative warrants—which are not judicial warrants, & not relevant in the context of a criminal investigation. If the reporting is accurate, it is very hard for me to see how Omar could be implicated (i.e., this was over 20 years ago, the papers were filled out by father, etc.)

As undesirable as the regular criminal justice system is, I agree. A random college administrator being entrusted to investigate, adjudicate, etc.—often with little or no legal training & minimal resources—is a recipe for flawed decisions made under imperfect conditions.

Anyways, in a captive setting, I totally realized how much charisma it takes to survive in national politics. He was so charming, he knew his audience. We were all Dems in our 20’s. & his pitch was aimed right at us. At one point, he just exclaimed “these guys are basically white nationalists!”

Random story about being a WV Dem. In the lead up to the 2020 election, I was a member of a student organization that got to meet with Manchin by Zoom. The thing about Manchin that a lot of nationals don’t realize—I don’t think there is a WVian who doesn’t have a personal story about meeting him.

I’d say it’s somewhat ideologically diverse. Younger WVian Dems are much more openly progressive. I’d say 95% of them are down for the standard Dem national agenda. For example, a lot of WV Dems complained about Manchin but swallowed it to vote for him because we knew what the alternative was

As a West Virginia Dem, from a WV Dem family, who knows a lot of WV Dems who also did not swap to R: It is hard to explain the intensity of hatred a deep red state Dem has for the average Republican elected. It makes the average NY House Member look like child’s play.

The Supreme Court decided Farmer v. Brennan—a case where they unanimously sided with a transgender inmate who sued prison officials for “deliberate indifference” to a substantial risk of serious harm about denial of care—in 1994. To me, it really hammers home how manufactured this thing is.
