This is true 👇👇👇 We're doing our best to practice this in our local, because our faculty colleagues *are* the union. (Also, our budget is funded by spare change from couch cushions 😜)

Duke recently invited our DFU colleague and member Leslie Maxwell to write any essay about her "Dolly Parton for Present?" writing class for first-year students. Recommended read! (Yes, we're biased.)

Reading next: The Adjunct by Maria Adelmann 👀
regulatorbookshop.com
The Adjunct: A Novel
A Lit Hub Most Anticipated Book of 2026 * Glamour's Best Books for Book Clubs 2026 * Bustle's Best New Books of MarchFrom the acclaimed author of How to Be Eaten, a fresh take on the campus novel that follows an adjunct professor gigging her way through academia’s poor job market when she crosses paths with her old PhD adviser, whose new novel might be about her—for readers of Worry, Vladimir, and Less.Sam, an adjunct professor at a public university in Baltimore, takes a last-minute gig at the private liberal arts college down the road. Overworked and underpaid, she lives in a blur of back-to-back classes, side hustles, and job applications for an ever-dwindling number of tenure-track positions. Her already precarious existence is thrown into disarray when she runs into her former grad school adviser, Dr. Tom Sternberg, on campus. Tom and Sam have a complicated history, and it’s the last thing she wants to think about as she navigates academic politics, institutional hurdles, and romantic entanglements with men and women that further complicate a sexuality not even she can define. Then she learns that Tom left his old job for undisclosed reasons—and his long-awaited second novel is about a professor reckoning with his checkered past. As rumors spread that Sam is the inspiration behind a central character, she fights to regain control of the story. A hilarious yet sobering look at how hustle culture has come to define modern academia, The Adjunct offers a bold twist on a tangled MeToo story and turns Sam’s downward spiral into a searing critique of class and the hollow promises of the American dream.

A really unfortunate consequence is that a lot of people outside the university world think those tuition hikes flow into the pockets of professors, feeding the RW "profs are elites" claims, and...lol no.

It may be summer, but we're still fighting tooth-and-nail for our contract and our colleagues who are set to lose their jobs soon. It can be a lonely fight sometimes but we guarantee you it's a righteous one.

Corporations spend more than $1.5 billion a year on union-busting. That’s $1.5 billion they could have spent on higher wages, better benefits, and improving workplace safety. Remember: if they weren’t so scared of worker power, they wouldn’t fight so hard against unions.

Class sizes were sacred in this program until they suddenly weren’t. But, after all, what you want in a world marred by AI is faculty paying less close and careful attention of student work. I guess $80k tuition doesn’t purchase what it used to. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Here's a path that we advise institutions to *not* consider: Increasing enrollment while firing adjunct faculty and requiring remaining faculty to teach more students for the same compensation.

“Let us be clear, we will not allow Father Shanley, Provost Simon Mølller, and an out-of-touch Board of Trustees to act like kings above the law and simply sweep away our decades-old faculty union. A union, we must remember, that was born from a faculty strike at St. John’s University in 1966-67.”

The Voting Rights Act is essentially dead and it’s quite possible that we will, like when a similar SCOTUS gutted civil rights at the fall of Reconstruction, see a disappearance of much of the Black congressional representation, especially in the most heavily Black states, which are in the South.

Incredible a school charging more than $80k in tuition thinks it can continuously jack class sizes of its once-esteemed writing program to save pennies and no one will care. It’s probably because they got away with increasing classes by 25% during the “financial crisis” of a 50% endowment INCREASE.
