Stefanie Duguay @dugstef.bsky.social · 28/01/2025People laugh when I say I study dating apps but today I got to think (and write) hard about how even apps like Tinder (re)create inequities in the most mundane yet intimate parts of our everyday lives, and that seems to matter a lot 031

Stefanie Duguay @dugstef.bsky.social · 18/11/2024I think you’re right about this, esp destigmatization. But the tech/industry and government/policy levels need to come into play - why is it so easy to create these images and to do so without repercussions? Analysis: This article applies the identity modulation framework to TikTok and the account of a user whose representation of lesbian identity is prominent. Conclusions and implications: While TikTok allows users to control their personal identifiability, it incentivizes them toward a far reach. The platform’s algorithm favours posts with a high salience of sexual identity, though only within the bounds of TikTok’s vague policies on acceptable self-expression. This case study illustrates how one user navigates these platform dynamics. 030
