8/ I heard a Midrash this week that put things into perspective for me. When Adam and Chava were thrown out of Gan Eden, it was Friday afternoon. The story goes that the sun didn’t go down on Shabbat, but it did go down after Shabbat.

7/ And with IoT devices like smart plugs/switches and controlers for things like A/C units, our systems, automations and AIs can even control some things in the real world. Not to even speak about automated driving cars and airplane auto-pilots.

6/ I yearn (and dread) for the day where my AIs can talk to each other instead of me playing the man-in-the-middle. Although being in the middle does help me follow and understand what they are doing.

5/ The cloud helped introduce and/or accelerate APIs and infrastructure as code. And that lead to the AI being able to deploy things and help us build. They use APIs, web interfaces and help access things faster and reason out things using all the technologies above.

4/ We started with audio signals over phone lines and moved to bus networks and to the more star broadcast network and then switched. And now AWS even has a hugely random network build that seems to add efficiency at scale.

3/ Beyond getting past computers based on vacuum tubes that took a whole room (by the way, data centers are not 1 computer that take up a full room, but gazillions of computers that take up many whole rooms). The networking technology that allows them to talk to each other.

2/ And one of the punishments was that people would have to work for their food. As we think about the creation of the world, I’ve been thinking of the steps it took to get us to the level of AI that we are using. And maybe what that will look like in the future.

1/ Chevre, this week we restart reading The Torah with Beresheit (בראשית). So we have the creation story, twice. There is the commandment to not eat from The Tree of Knowledge. They did eat and were expelled from from Gan Eden.

9/ it is accessible to my phone if I wanted. So our technologies are now traveling with us around the country, around the world and we can do nearly anything from the pocket computer that 10-20 years ago would have been considered a super computer.

8/ Cloudformation and pushed it to my account. I now have a simple RSS feed that my podcatcher is subscribed to. And every time I complete a lesson, it downloads the next for me automagically. Most of this was done on my phone. The 2nd AI is easier for me to use via a computer terminal, but ...

7/ The AI generated a podcast image for me and even told me how to configure my podcatcher to download oldest first. I then used Eric’s AI to review what my first AI generated (I was able to just share the conversation link with the 2nd AI) and it reviewed everything, wrapped it in

6/ So I used 1 AI to help me find some lessons (shiurim) in English that go through Ein Yaakov. I downloaded 1 episode and listened to it. I then had my AI build me a Lambda to create and RSS feed to house on my web site which pointers to the storage locations for the shiurim.

5/ At the synagogue there, I was moved by the story from the Gemara they told. The story is less important, but I remembered there is a version of the Gemara that is only the aggadata (stories) called Ein Yaakov.

4/ came and went. I spent that day catching up on my personal backlog, like using an AI (thank you Eric ) to migrate docker EC2 machines to EKS. We also went on some tiyulim (excursions). We went to Tzipori, a Gemara era city that was the home of Rebbi Yehuda HaNassi.

2/ Simchat Torah, I learned today (really TIL), was established around the year 800 CE in Bagdad and is the youngest holiday we have. Younger than Chanukah and Purim. For that story, you can see Elon Gilad. (fun fact, I was watching one of his videos on the train in Israel and met his uncle ..

1/ Chevre, there is still no parsha this week. This Shabbat, in Israel, is both Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Outside of Israel, Simchat Torah will be on Sunday. Shemini Atzeret is a separate holiday from Sukkot, we exit the Succah and have a special, last day, holiday with HaShem.

4/ Since we can do this from virtually anywhere (I once streamed a video from my home server while on a flight in the US), really “moving” into the Succah is possible. Just make sure all your technologies and entertainments aren’t keeping the neighbor’s kids up, they’re out in a hut too.

3/ intermediate week (Chol HaMoed). I remember one Sukkot sitting in my Succah and supporting an AWS AZ outage, an extremely rare occurrence. And now these days, we can sit in the succah with our phones, our tablets, our laptops or whatever and stream videos, talk to anyone in the world.

5/ Add in the AI’isms and running a workload in the cloud off something as simple as a raspberry pi is completely doable (just need it for the browser and maybe an SSH connection).

4/ Building in the cloud makes this easier (at least cleaner around the house), but sometimes I question if the complexity is necessary. Then something will break and having some of that complexity will make it all work again automagically.

3/ As I have been re-evaluating things in my own life, due to the new year, I’ve been thinking about how to add resilience to some of the systems that I use. Many of them are sitting on cloud compute and many of them reboot/restart themselves after a problem.

2/ The parsha is mostly taken up with The Song of Moshe. It’s his goodbye to the Israelites. He re-iterates a common theme of doing the “right” thing and staying on the Path of HaShem.

1/ Chevre, this week’s parsha is Hazinu (האזינו). This is the last parsha that we’ll read on Shabbat. The next 2 Shabbatot will be Sukkot and Simchat Torah, where we will read special Torah readings and then complete (and restart) the reading the Torah.

7/ But Yom Kippur is considered one of the happies days because it’s the day that our sins (between man and HaShem) are forgiven. I think Rosh Hashanah is more like a microcosm of life. Life has these dicotemies between good and bad, or difficult and impossible situations.

6/ I always felt that folks generally are afraid of Yom Kippur, that’s the big fast day, we all wear white and there is an idea of emulating angels (I wonder if the Nitro cards have an Angel Emulation mode).

4/ Rosh Hashanah reminds of of this split-brain. On one side, we’ve been saying extra tehillim (psalms) for a month. Ashekenazim have been saying selichot for a week and Sefardim have been saying them for a month. Rosh Hashanah is the New Year, but it’s also Judgement Day, Yom HaDin.

3/ And potentially they could both write to the shared storage causing the database to become corrupted. The solution we used, at that time, was called STONITH (shoot the other node in the head). The node taking over the database would actually go and turn off/disable the other node.

2/ When I used to run on-prem databases, the biggest issue we could run into with our failover mechanism was to run into a split brain scenario. This is where the 2 computers running the database couldn’t talk to each other and so both machines would decide to take over.

7/ We’ve had 2 funerals and so 2 families sitting shiva across the street from each other. So for the past few days, it’s been an extra challenge to determine which house to go to for which minyan. (I based my decision on which family I thought would have a harder time getting a minyan).
