Winston notes, 'He is too intelligent. He sees too clearly and speaks too plainly.' Winston predicts, correctly, that Syme will become an unperson. 🤔🤔🤔

At WOMAD for the day. Gotta say the Byline Times people are doing an amazing job of bringing thoughtful, informed, free thinking, engaging political/cultural dialogue to this event. Their tent overflowing, more at each session. Real, nuanced, non-escapist, challenging. @bylinetimes.bsky.social

Still, good to see you correct your analysis now you have more information.

Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
I also have a big issue with you choosing to use Farage's word "gift" in headline and socials when it is simply not established if it was a gift or not. Using the word is prejudging the matter, and taking Farage at his word, and amplifying his (IMHO dishonest) narrative.
110
Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Yes, exactly. IMHO it was naive click bait to do a "legal analysis" of the tax implications of a political scandal based on ~1 day of info. You didn't know enough. Let alone dress it up with the highly misleading "Farage probably doesn't owe tax on £5M gift" headline, which served Farage so well.
110
Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
Yeah but you weren't party to the evidence that matters. The idea this was an unconditional gift was always laughably unlikely. Since you lacked information, better conclusions would have been "If evidence emerges, this will be taxable" or simply "we don't know if this is taxable, it might be"
110
Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
LOL you blocked me on X for challenging you on this. It's so obvious to those who understand grift that there was a quid pro quo here, that this was never a pure gift, and that HMRC could investigate on that assumption. Good to see you change your tune now the evidence starts to come out.

The report linked in the article makes clear why this is news. The vast reduction in battery costs alone makes this a significant shift.

Really a shame to see East Anglia Bylines going down the MMT money printing rabbit hole without nuance. There's no return once you start to dogmatically declare that you (or your pals) know how to print money and are superior at managing the risks of investing it "well", through a central authority

Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
Disappointed to see strawman arguments around bankruptcy and money printing ("currency issuing"). Badenoch is wrong, but a technocratic "we can make the banks print money of the kind we like" answer to the "it's expensive" argument is not credible. We need to win the cost argument fair and square.

If you're after historical perspectives on America's emerging Christian Nationalist extremists, and the tensions this violent radicalism will bring, this book may be useful. It may also be useful for non-believers who might seek allies and common cause with those more religiously minded.

For context I grew up in a protestant influenced family in a poor, mainly-Catholic neighbourhood in Australia. The language and symbols of religion were everywhere - even if religion was a relatively weak force in Australia at the time.

The chapter on WWI is particularly enlightening - how both liberal ahd conservative Protestants in Britain and Germany aligned behind nationalist war interests. Also the chapter on German Protestants in WWII, especially the sycophantic alignment of German Christian Nationalists with the Nazis.

I'm enjoying reading the book "Protestants" by Alec Ryrie, an historical look at Protestants from Reformation to today. It's strong on recurring historical patterns of religious/political thought, and wil be useful for those wanting to get inside the shape shifting nature of Protestantism.

@josiahmortimer.bsky.social There might be an interesting angle for you & Bylines here - digging into the alignment between Christianity, religious beliefs and renewables - feels like they're potentially much more aligned than appears at present. cf Texas solar too bsky.app/profile/dsym...

🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 Wonderful to hear John. And yes exactly what I mean - it's not at odds. It would be amazing if the big forces in the Christian world (Catholics, MAGA etc) woke up one morning, looked out the window and said "Renewables? Yes!".

Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
Thanks David. So good to hear. It feels like such an important way to unite rather than divide. (in OP I was thinking mostly of the Truth Social posts I was looking at yesterday, also anti-renewables energy propaganda on X. Hard to tell what's even real in those places though...)

Similarly tensions exist for wind - but compared to oil & gas it's lightweight in impact. Do they no longer see the impact Oil & Gas has on creation?

Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
(I understand solar can be in tension with agriculture, and that's a real tension. But if you cover a car park with solar, what's not to like?)

Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
I don't get why Christians are so keen on oil & gas. It seems like solar and wind are the most beautifully Christian-aligned forms of energy production possible - abundant, God-given and aligned with Christian imagery of light and air. Oil & gas are hellish in comparison. What am I missing?

The Lie is the signifier of membership of the holy tribe. To believe the lie and amplify it is to be one of the chosen people, one of the saved. It's as American as apple pie. From William Miller to today.

When you spend time on TS, you quickly start to normalise to a world where all is a lie. Everyone is on the make, everyone is a grifter, all is sham, all is posture. But if you're MAGA, they're also YOUR people, YOUR tribe, YOUR liars. The tribe bound together - bound by the Truth that is a Lie.

I spent some time looking at "Truth" Social today. Mainly out of curiosity. Every single post is propaganda, a lie. All posts are AI generated imagery. Not a single authentic interaction or discussion, besides the vast accounts all new accounts are auto-subscribed to.

Sorry what's the actual policy proposal here? What I see is a demand that government will spend precious billions maintaining a price cap during an energy crisis, so every household - regardless of wealth or need - can burn burn burn a finite resource with 20% restricted supply, with no consequence?

Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
In enterprise settings I would probably reject that PR and tell the contributor to use a coding agent to break it into orthogonal pieces.
110
Don Syme @dsyme.bsky.social · 18/03/2026
In OSS settings the contributions will shift to well written issues with depth analysis. The maintainer will then assign these to an agent to do piece by piece.

Help is OK. Throwing £8B at direct subsidy is, in my eyes, too much. The only way this country will shift off its addiction to oil and gas for heating and embrace what's necessary (a shift to insulation, renewables, heat pumps) is when those consuming understand the costs.
