They’re actually hands-on exhibits! For mine, you build structures and then cause an earthquake to see how the buildings do, and then make changes to improve the design.

There was a M7 in 1943, but that was offshore to the south and at least 100 km from today’s event.

Are earthquakes becoming more common? Here’s what the numbers say
Scientists have been able to catalogue the largest earthquakes for a very long time.

This earthquake in Panama is the 12th earthquake of magnitude 7 or greater this year. Is this an unusual number of large quakes? No. This graph shows M7+ earthquakes over the last 30 years. This year is very average.
This graph shows earthquakes of magnitude seven or greater since 1996.

Many people will be physically unable to keep their feet and can be injured by falling or, as you say, by being stepped on. Imagine if everyone just knelt down. Then everyone would be safe (from falling, trampling, etc).

🚨 The recommended protective action for earthquakes varies around the world mainly due to building construction practices, building codes, etc. ‼️ Ocassionally, the recommended action may change. For instance, if you’re in bed during an earthquake, stay in bed. (More info below)

DROP. Strong shaking can knock you off your feet. Get down before it knocks you down. COVER. Get under a sturdy table or desk and protect your head and neck. HOLD ON. Your cover can move during strong shaking, so move with it.

Do you know what to do if you feel earthquake shaking? If you live in North America and the ground starts to shake the recommended action is to “drop, cover, and hold on”.
