Cycling along the towpath. Constriction ahead, overhanging brambles; three cyclists approaching. I stop and wave them through. ‘Thank you!’ ‘Thank you!’ ‘SMILE!’ the last one shouts as he passes. Thanks, that really helps

Yes- there was a pair nesting on Caen Hill, and the cob was defending his patch against all comers- which was a full-time job as that’s one of the busiest bits of towpath on the canal…

I bet! I used to live in a caravan on a welsh mountain and they’d come and rub their backs underneath it, setting it swaying!

A short walk in the cool of the dawn. Startling bellowing of a cow in the night; there’s a herd in the adjacent field. How like the foghorn is the cow When moos come unexpectedly. I thought I was alone; but now There’s loads of them right next to me.

Thank goodness, someone moved their boat this morning so I slipped Eve into a mooring where the row of poplars on the other side of the canal offer shade from mid-afternoon onwards. Still hard work, this weather, but counting my blessings

Poem for a hot day on the canal
Picture of a lolly, with a poem

The hoverflies have come to greet

The newly-blossomed meadowsweet

And dragonflies nod from the stalk

Beside the towpath where we walk,

Glad of the shade the ash tree casts

From the sun's heat that makes us gasp

Perhaps for Pimms, or maybe Bolly?

No; Fran would like a Sky Ray Lolly.

The gean is busy with chuckling blackbirds and pigeons, cos the cherries are almost ripe and that’s good enough for them.

…though I prefer this version of St Werburgh. As is often the case in my pics, was modelled by daughter. “Right, you’re miraculously restoring a goose to life…”

Yes, we have insurance - it’s a necessary condition of getting a boat licence. Though when boats sank on the Avon a few years ago owing to a failure of the storm barrier, it was CRT who took responsibility for the damage…
