Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 24/08/2026It 100% does this very very well already. AI is very very good for those mindless tasks that take up time, just don't let it write the thing. Also very good at verifying a bibliography if you do it right. 101
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 22/08/2026New paper in European Journal of Population 💡💡. What happens when demographic surveys move from face-to-face to online? Using a 3-country GGS experiment 🇩🇪🇭🇷🇵🇹, we find that mode matters for social desirability items, respondent burden and who participates. edu.nl/7mbhxlink.springer.com 020
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Also, a small nice nugget to end on. In all that change, by mere coincidence, the GGP is now housed just 13 mins by bike or one pleasant stroll through the Haagse Bos away from where the ISI was based in the Hague. 010
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Overall, if the US is stepping back then maybe we all need to be a little more international and collaborative to patch the gaps. Maybe the @gatesfoundation.bsky.social should consider that? Is this something the EU wants to support? 🇪🇺 100
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Compare this to fields like astronomy. Look at the Square Kilometer Array. A massive international effort to coordinate efforts and resources to take a broad and unprecendented perspective. Maybe its time that the World Fertility Survey is revived to help us take the big broadview on demography? 100
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026In addition the funding landscape has shifted AGAIN. USAID looks like a less reliable supporter of the DHS. Meanwhile, the GGP is about to become an ERIC and an established part of the European Data Landscape. Is it time for the @iussp.bsky.social to look at the global demographic data landscape? 100
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026That brings us to today though. Whilst there are clear differences in needs across the surveys, there are many many countries that sit across the two surveys general designs. This was really clear when the GGP was fielded in 🇰🇿🇧🇾🇲🇩. There are lots of important questions that span both surveys. 100
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Very few researchers realize that the DHS and GGP are actually twins seperated at birth. It made sense to split as sexual health was the primary concern for the DHS were as gender equality and low fertility were the concern in the FFS/GGP. This was reenforced by differing funding streams 110
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026This went well but struggled to find a sustainable funding environment like USAID provided for the DHS. However, in the early 2000's the European Commission provided that funding ecosystem and with the help of the UNECE the FFS became what is now the GGP @ggp.bsky.social 100
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026The UNECE coordinated the efforts to create a follow on survey to the WFS which focused on the demographic transition underway in many developed economies. The initial round of data collection conducted in the 1990's was called the Fertility and Family Survey (FFS). 110
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026....The other half included countries who participated in the WFS by contributing their own fertility survey data including 🇧🇪🇧🇬🇨🇿🇩🇰🇫🇮🇫🇷🇬🇧🇭🇺🇮🇱🇮🇹🇯🇵🇳🇱🇳🇴🇵🇱🇷🇴🇪🇸🇺🇸🇵🇹🇨🇦🇸🇪🇨🇭 and Yugoslavia. When the DHS was born, these countries went off and did something entirely different. 100
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026The interview paints the DHS as the natural successor of WFS but I have always considered this to be an instance of twins seperated at birth. Half of the WFS community went on to be financed by USAID and become the DHS. 100
Tom Emery @drtomemery.bsky.social · 31/07/2026This was a really interesting read from @sarayeatman.bsky.social but feel like it only tells part of the WFS story. Maybe a bit of a thread: www.demographic-research.org/articles/vol...demographic-research.orgDemographic Research - A personal perspective on the history of the World Fertility Survey and The Demographic and Health Surveys Program: An interview with Tom Pullum (Volume 55 - Article 6 | Pages 2...Volume 55 - Article 6 | Pages 201–222 132
