My father (Professor Noël Peacock) & I were delighted to host the 48th Annual Conference of the national Society for Early Modern French Studies (SEMFS) last month at @glasgow.ac.uk - 3 days of research papers on the very topical theme of 'Freedom/La Liberté'. Further information in the next post.

OTD 80 years ago, Operation Crossroads nuclear test, shot Baker, created images with global impacts on generations of audiences, explored in my article 'From Crossroads to Godzilla: the cinematic legacies of the first postwar nuclear tests' (@uk.theconversation.com 2021). Article link in next post.
Operation Crossroads Baker (wide) nuclear weapons test, 25 July 1946, Public Domain. From the US Department of Defense. Black and white photograph. Historical wide shot. A hollow column of water erupts from a lagoon, surrounded by a fast-moving, hemispheric white condensation cloud (Wilson cloud effect) hovering above the shockwave-disturbed water surface, with target warships faintly visible near the base. In the foreground, a beach and trees, part of the island where the camera is located.

I much appreciated the opportunity in March to design & lead Exercise HOPE AGE in Geneva at #HNPW with @unocha.org & @uofglasgow.bsky.social @uofggameslab.bsky.social. Using #SeriousGames we explored ways #humanitarian organisations may navigate complex environments of a hypothetical major conflict.

Much appreciated hearing about fascinating work by colleagues at BISA's Global #Nuclear Order Conference last week @gnobisa.bsky.social, & to have the opportunity to speak about "Crisis #Gaming, #NuclearDeterrence History, & Human-Technology Interaction in Strategic Decision-Making". Photo by BISA.
Image by BISA. A slide with text from a PowerPoint about the paper described in the post, including 'Challenges and Opportunities..., Limits of immersion? (How M.A.D are we?), AI-generated scenarios or aids to decision-making...baked in assumptions..., Unintended consequences..., The greatest unknown/'black box'...humans using games!' To the right there is a screenshot image showing leaders from the Civilization I game, including the text "[Non-wargaming example, but relevant...] Screenshot from Civilization I, of ruler Mahatma Gandhi, with the comment, "Greetings from M. Gandhi, ruler and King of the Indians...Our word are backed with NUCLEAR WEAPONS!" 1991 - a reference to the apocryphal glitch in the early Civilization games which accidentally made AI-controlled Gandhi the player most likely to use nuclear weapons and the meme culture which grew up around this (the precise circumstances and effects of the glitch, where it seems to occur, are debated). To the right of the screen are portraits of people on Zoom, attending the conference.

Look forward to running HOPE AGE, #Humanitarian Operations Planning Exercise in Assertive Governance Environments, co-designed with UN OCHA, in a hybrid #HNPW2025 workshop in Geneva, Tuesday 25 March, 2-3.30pm CET/1-2.30pm UK-time. More information & sign up in next post's link. #HNPW
A flyer advertising the event described in the post, HOPE AGE, with the added detail of it being in Salle 2 of Geneva CICG. The image on the right is of a dove with a black and white chess board/checkerboard pattern on it and clutching a King chess piece in its beak, symbolising the combination of strategy and Serious Gaming with humanitarian operations. There is also a small insert image of Dr Tim Peacock.

10 years ago, I made & released a stop motion short film, 'Lego Santa in Space': Santa rescued from a comet by robot rover. (Not much chance to make films recently, but encouraged my channel has 258,000 views. Hope to get back to it someday). Best wishes to all for Christmas & 2025.

1974 #OTD #ABBA sets out on 1st European tour, winning Eurovision earlier that year. Success is mixed, even having to cancel one concert in Switzerland after poor ticket sales, but they played to full houses in 1975. 📸 from April 1974 by AVRO at Beeld & Geluid, CC BY-SA 3.0 NL license. #History
