Is the world more ready than it was before COVID-19? Yes and no. But if leaders fulfil the commitments they made at the #UNGA High-Level meeting, they will make it a yes. #UNGA

That’s a wrap on #UNGA. Different countries. Different priorities. Different perspectives. But health is one thing that connects us all. Preparedness for future health threats is a shared responsibility.

Pandemic prevention, preparedness and response is not just an aspiration. It is a global public good. My one ask to world leaders at the #UNGA High-Level Meeting: get the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing annex to the Pandemic Agreement done. As soon as possible.

Meeting rooms. Corridors. Elevators. We need bold new thinking on how we finance #HealthForAll. Day 2 of #UNGA was about finding it.

22,022 steps and counting. That was day one of #UNGA. Walking and talking, quite literally. A healthy challenge to my fellow leaders this week: make every step count. Between meetings, Walk the Talk for your own health and for #HealthForAll the people we are here to serve.

We are seeing encouraging signs that we are gaining ground against #Ebola in the #DRC. But to slow this outbreak and stop it, we need more resources. We are grateful to all donors who have supported the response. More support is urgently needed. Full update ⬇️

If it isn’t safe, it isn’t care. For people living with heart disease, cancer, diabetes or chronic respiratory disease, care is lifelong. A delayed diagnosis, wrong medicine, unsafe procedure or poor communication can cost lives. Everyone deserves safe care, for life. #WorldPatientSafetyDay

In #Gaza, the humanitarian emergency continues to deepen, with public health risks growing as winter approaches and most people remain displaced in overcrowded tented camps. The already overwhelmed health system cannot withstand additional surges in disease and illness. The best medicine is peace.

In the fight against the #Ebola epidemic in #DRC, we have made a lot of progress, but it’s not enough, & we still face major challenges. Earning and keeping community trust & community ownership are key to changing the trajectory of the epidemic. My latest update on the situation & the response ⬇️

Sad days for the @who.int family, with the sudden passing of Dr Vasee Moorthy. Vasee joined WHO in 2009 and made a major contribution to advancing the Organization’s work on clinical trials, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

But this must be backed by sustained commitment, greater resources, and stronger international support. Together, we must guarantee safe access for responders, protect civilians and health workers, and mobilize the support needed to end this outbreak and save lives.

Science has enabled humanity to achieve extraordinary progress, but the challenge facing global health today is not simply how to produce innovation. For more than 125 years, Fiocruz has demonstrated that scientific excellence and social commitment are mutually reinforcing.

Deeply humbled to accept the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from Fiocruz. I accept this honour on behalf of the many colleagues with whom I have worked throughout my career, also on behalf of health workers around the world, who continue to serve their communities with courage, skill and compassion.

The @who.int Constitution was never the work of one nation. It was built through international collaboration & signed by representatives from every region of the world. Different cultures. Different political systems. Different histories. United by one belief: health is a fundamental human right.

African leaders also played an important role in shaping the WHO Constitution: Liberia's Dr Joseph Nathaniel Togba helped draft and sign the Constitution before later serving as the seventh President of the World Health Assembly.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus @drtedros.who.int · 22/07/2026
Dr Brock Chisholm did not draft the Constitution. He brought it to life. As @who.int's first Director-General, he transformed its founding vision into action, leading the Organization through its earliest years and helping establish the institution we know today.
121
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus @drtedros.who.int · 22/07/2026
France also played a key role. André Cavaillon and Xavier Leclainche co-submitted France's draft Constitution, contributing ideas that informed the final text signed 80 years ago.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus @drtedros.who.int · 22/07/2026
Building @who.int required more than vision. It required drafting every principle, every article and every commitment. Sir William Jameson represented the United Kingdom throughout the drafting process and submitted one of the constitutional texts that helped shape the final document.

In a turbulent world of increasing division, we can all agree that everyone who sets out on a journey, to work, to school, to see the people they love, should reach their destination safely. I call on world leaders to ensure new UN declaration on #RoadSafety becomes more than words on a page.

Road deaths fall by 21% but stronger action is needed to save lives bit.ly/4hm2Ldc I commend countries for the strong political declaration adopted at the UN High-Level meeting on #RoadSafety, which aims to ensure more roads are designed for people first, not motor vehicles, with safety as priority

Two months into the #Ebola outbreak in #DRC, intense transmission in Ituri is our primary concern. Health interventions alone will not stop this outbreak. Urgent political action is needed to secure access, protect health workers and scale up the response. Even a temporary ceasefire would help.
