Bae Suah - untold night and day. Completely surreal, dreamlike, repetitive. One of the strangest things I’ve read in a long time. Exists in a state where it doesn’t make sense to say I ‘understood it’. I enjoyed it in the way I like Trout Mask Replica - without knowing why or even if I did like it.

The difference between books 1 and 2 of the Sakamoto memoir is astonishing. Book 1 is almost flippant, sketchy, races through decades at an alarming rate. Book 2 is the polar opposite, deep, thoughtful, insightful, detailed. The juxtaposition works perfectly, book 2 is deeply brilliant & moving.

Screengrab from Carsten’s Noton site. Seems like Ryuichi and Carsten decided to release it before Ryuichi passed way. As such my use of ‘reworkings’ is an inaccurate description as they were in effect collaborating. 🖤

David Sylvian’s ‘Gone to Earth’ was 40 today. Hoping that at some point his solo albums will be treated with the same reverence as Talk Talk’s later albums. For me Secrets of the Beehive is just as magnificent as Spirit of Eden.

Half way through Groovy, Laidback & Nasty by Daniel Dylan Wray. Absolutely brilliant, a fine tribute to the Sheffield music scene. The first half very resonant from my experiences seeing bands in Sheffield during the 70’s and 80’s. Great to see Artery, I’m So Hollow and In The Nursery get covered.

The Vegetarian was brilliant. Very strange and dark. Originally intended to follow it up with Dazai’s ‘No longer Human’ but decided on a bit of French crime before tackling that. This is my first Manchette, looks promising. #booksky

Wish they’d ban substitutes and the dugout joining in with goal celebrations. It’s aesthetically shite. All goals should be celebrated in the style of Denis Law.

Really loved the Ruth Ozeki. Next up another Seichō Matsumoto. Have been waiting for Twilight in Musashino to be published but when I went for it I spotted Point Zero which has been more difficult to get hold of. Should be a good warm up for the new one. #booksky

For some inexplicable reason I’m a sucker for melancholic Japanese films. Favourites are Hamaguchi’s Drive my Car and Kore-eda’s After Life & Maborosi. This isn’t bad either, has a lovely Sakamoto score.

Slightly underwhelmed with Solvej Balle “on the calculation of volume 1”. I realise there are 7 in the series and I think that’s the problem. A really interesting idea but seems to be all set up and it doesn’t have time to go anywhere more interesting. Definitely want to continue though.

Just finished Mark Kermode/Jenny Nelson’s ‘Surround Sound’. Marvellous stuff. Nice to see my obsession with Eiko’s Drive My Car is shared by Mark. Also great to see the prominence of some of my favourites - Hildur, Jonny G, Blanck Mass, Clint Mansell and others - alongside the old legends.

Absolutely loving Everything We Do Is Music by Elizabeth Alker. Despite being familiar with most of the artists discussed this book digs deep (enough) and constantly reveals new and interesting ideas and connections. The chapter on Pauline Oliveros is fantastic. Inspiring me to keep muddling on.

After sitting on it for 6 months wondering whether there was any point releasing any more music I’ve gone for it and uploaded a new album to Bandcamp ready for publishing tomorrow. If this seems like an underwhelming piece of promo I can only apologise. I hope someone out there enjoys the music.

Really loving these Seichō Matsumoto books. The downside is there are only 5/6 available in the UK - though another is set to be published next May. The clarity of the writing coupled with how things patiently unfold really reminds me of Simenon.

They had a thin white sheet across the front of the stage, a large screen at the back and the band between the two. Projecting different visuals onto each surface with the band in silhouette. It was outstanding.
