Winter Solstice today. Likely record warm Christmas on tap. Perfect opportunity to explain why we have winter and can still have a warming climate. Enjoy. My thoughts www.forbes.com/sites/marsha... --

Sitting in my local spoons, thinking about an ambitious side coding project I want to try. Make an iceberg float and classification GUI on python.

I think I'm almost ready to submit my paper again. This has been ongoing since last December. Hundreds of hours.

Peer review process for iceberg science: "You're training an AI for your pipeline? You gotta get more images!" The data scarce field of iceberg detection: "Hahaha sure you want me to get 200 images, 95% of which will be useless" #academicsky

Explain your username: Hi I'm Sonny and I got my PhD in 2022. I'm also autistic and been diagnosed since 1998. My special interests are ice, snow, weather, planes, trains and travel. I turned one of those special interests into a living. How? I study icebergs.

Academia is cool because if you're doing it right, every paper you published in the last 3 years feels inadequate now that you understand the topic better, but it'll take 3 years to get out the version where you get it more right, and you get to do that until one day you die! Isn't that cool

Doing a linkedin course on plain writing, and some of these tips are completely different to scientific writing. I've always been told I write like a scientist, even outside of science.

As an autistic adult, I like to tidy my own spaces and ensure only I move things around so I can remember where it all is. If someone moves things when I'm out of sight, it could make things more difficult.

Today's a very good day. I wrote my first ever research grant proposal last month. Today I was told I'm being awarded the grant. Happy days. 😄

Earwax build up is so bad for me. I am wondering if its just my stress levels. I'm autistic, so my chronic stress levels are quite high compared to the NT population.

There's something annoying to me about media articles that have to be written to hide blatantly obvious messaging. What's stopping you from saying the quiet parts out loud? I'm very good at spotting patterns and hidden messaging. It's a red flag if "everyone is welcome" is controversial to you.

As I write a giant application and another paper, I can't help but continue to have the utmost empathy for my friends in the US. It's an empathy that makes me physically shake and my heart beat rapidly increase. This is autistic hyper empathy at its strongest.

An astrophysicist could answer this one. The Sun would have to expand for billions of years to warm up Mars, surely?

As someone with an actual PhD in geography, I am utterly disgusted with Google for this. What a joke.
A screen shot of Google Earth with “Gulf of Mexico” in the search bar. The red pin in the gulf is labeled “Gulf of America.”

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!
A line graph showing atmospheric CO2 levels at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1955 to 2025. The y-axis represents CO2 mole fraction in parts per million (ppm), ranging from 320 to 420 ppm, while the x-axis is years.

So polarisation is a word included here. How on earth are radar polarimetry scientists supposed to publish research? What about physics research in optics?

So many journals to pick from but who? JoG - good for glaciology work without a big remote sensing focus MDPI RS - not sure about this one, already have 2 with them IEEE JSTARS - really good for methods in remote sensing applications. RS of Environment - Seems good for a mix of both T & A.

I want to make it clear that some older folks and adults who criticised Tik Tok and young folk on it ever since inception, are the same people who, here in the UK, whether a voter or in political office, opted to decimate our youth services, youth clubs and opportunities for young kids to thrive.

Sonny Bailey @drsonny.bsky.social · 19/01/2025
I don't think academics (especially) should be making fun of younger folks who have now lost access to Tik Tok. No matter how you feel about it personally, many folk from marginalised communities have lost a means to put food on the table. And it's any user who registered an account in the U.S.

So the felon who originally wanted it banned now wants it unbanned, and the CEO will be at his inauguration. The thing I'm saddest about is a loss of income for people who are in dire poverty in the U.S. and who made funds from the app to put a bit of food on the table.

So I've just been offered to do some glaciology marking for 4 hours on 8 scripts. I have a tight week and they want it back by Monday. But I've got a bit of free time while my code is left to do its job, so I've taken on the extra workload. I haven't had an opportunity to mark work in a long time.
