Was fantastic to chat with Anna, Jo, and Kristi on the end of sport podcast - as a massive fan of the podcast AND heated rivalry - this was awesome. Would be useful for any sport sociology classes discussing sexuality + sport too 🙌

Today is Transgender Day of Visibility. Trans folk are having to resist relentless attacks by politicians, media, academics, etc who trash them as an “ideology” and seek to censor their lives. We must work harder to end erasure of trans people and make trans visibility, freedom and safety a reality.

“It should be a medical discussion and decision between an individual and their doctors — not one made by politicians.” Politicians must stop weaponising their anxieties to block medical transition. Trans people shouldn’t be denied care because those in positions of power object to their existence.

For as the research highlights we hear these comments so often it becomes normalised and we learn to accept it - that it’s just the norm. We need to break this norm- every LGBTIQA+ person deserves to go to work knowing they will be safe and free of harrassment.
010
Dr Ryan Storr @drryanstorr.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
But like sexist comments and behaviour - we need to show that we don’t accept them and they are harmful and damaging. If you see or hear a LGBTIQA+ person receive these comments - check in on them and ensure they are ok….

Dr Ryan Storr @drryanstorr.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
people feel entitled to question, comment, and harass people about these topics because that’s what they assume and think we are- who we have sex with. Good allyship is calling these comments and behaviour out - or calling in.

Reducing LGBTIQA+ identities to sex and private spaces of the bedroom is wrong - and we don’t do this or speak like this about cisgender or heterosexual people - so people need to stop doing this. This is why I believe there is such a high prevalence….

Dr Ryan Storr @drryanstorr.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
For example- many sports clubs/ orgs- when questioned or prompted to reflect on how many LGBTIQA+ people may be in their club, publicly open about their identity- a common response is ‘we don’t need to know what goes on in the bedroom’ or ‘it’s none of our business who people have sex with’.

Thank you to Prof Kerry Robinson Dr Cristyn Davies and the team for leading this important research. What stands out to me, in comparison to some of my work and research - is reducing LGBTIQA+ identities and relationships to sex and sexualising our communities.

Yesterday saw the launch of an important report led by colleagues in Sydney - on the experiences of LGBTIQA+ young people + sexual harrassment. The results are shocking but not surprising -with 77% of LGBTIQA+ young people experiencing workplace sexual harrassment. www.anrows.org.au/media-releas...

Sexual harassment faced by LGBTQ young people in the workplace is widespread and targeted. This is the key finding of new research released today.

Whilst there have been efforts - through pride games, and inclusion efforts in sport in recent years - it masks the undercurrent of constant discrimination in the form of homo/bi/transphobia directed to LGBTIQA+ people who engage/ work/ play in sport. Unless sports take action, it will not go away.

I wrote about this in several avenues - but two conversation articles highlight it well. One around resistance to LGBTIQA+ issues in sport - specifically’heteroactivism’, and one about how sport has become a key avenue + platform for anti-trans movements - which politicians have demonstrated well.

Dr Ryan Storr @drryanstorr.bsky.social · 18/11/2024
That sport is used as a platform to advance anti-LGBTIQA+ movements - + becomes a vacuum to carry + promote discrimination, homophobia + transphobia in particular. My research recently showed that discrimination towards LGBTIQA+ people is still very common, + sports are doing little to combat it.
