Avicenna's Canon of Medicine (c. 1025) was translated into Latin and stayed a core textbook in European universities for centuries. So when Venice held ships offshore for 40 days, it was building on a medical tradition he helped shape. 🩺

"Quarantine" comes from Venetian quarantena, "forty days" (from Latin quaranta). The 40-day idea is traced to Persian physician and polymath Avicenna (Ibn Sina, 980-1037), who discussed isolation and the 40-day period (al-arbaʿiniyya) in his Canon of Medicine. 🧵

I profoundly disagree with Peter Thiel here, & worry about a world shaped by the likes of him and Musk, where empathy is considered a weakness and trying to do good invites contempt. "Getting things done" means little without asking who benefits and who gets hurt.
