Call for Papers: Leeds IMC 2026 Neurodivergent and Neuroqueer Temporalities Deadline: Monday 15th September 9am #CFP #IMC2026 #Medievalsky #Neurodiversity #Neuroqueer
Call for papaers poster. Medieval image of Hildegard of Bingen as header. Neurodivergent infinity loop behind text.

Text reads: Call for Papers: International Medieval Congress 2026
Neurodivergent and Neuroqueer Temporalities

Over the past decade, critical neurodiversity studies and neuroqueer theory have come to prominence. These new paradigms seek to explore differences in mind through an understanding that there are naturally diverse ways of being rather than through pathologisation. While the paradigms are beginning to be used in other academic disciplines, they are yet to be implemented in a significant way in medieval studies. This panel seeks to change this by encouraging medievalists to see the potentials in neuroqueer and neurodivergent scholarship and prompting discussion in these areas.
This panel is requesting proposals for papers which examine aspects of medieval temporalities through a neurodivergent or neuroqueer lens. This includes, but is not limited to:
•	Application of contemporary neuroqueer or neurodivergent theory to medieval temporal concerns.
•	Examination of non-normative experiences of time, e.g. in mystical ecstasy.
•	Exploration of neuroqueer attitudes to normative lifecycles.
•	Examination of the effects of time and age on the mind in medieval texts.
•	Neurodivergent readings of medieval material relating to temporalities.

Paper proposals should be under 200 words and accompanied by a short bio. Proposals should be sent to A.T.Paley1@leeds.ac.uk for the attention of Ash Paley and Daniel Coultas by 9am on Monday 15th September 2025.

As a follow-up to my earlier David Wojnarowicz post, here's something to keep in mind in coming years: a statement from Wojnarowicz—relayed by artist Zoe Leonard—about the importance of embracing beauty in difficult times (via @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social's "Orwell's Roses" bsky.app/profile/rebe...)
The tension exists even in nonnarrative art. The artist Zoe Leonard was bashful about making beautiful images during the AIDS crisis and said so to fellow artist and activist David Wojnarowicz, who replied, "Zoe, these are so beautiful, and that's what we're fighting for. We're being angry and complaining because we have to, but where we want to go is back to beauty. If you let go of that, we don't have anywhere to go." So beauty can be both what one does not wish to change and where one wishes to go, the compass or rather north star for change. Leonard reflects on their interchange: "You know, we were all just too busy for beauty. We were too angry for beauty. We were too heartbroken for beauty. I felt like an asshole with these picture of clouds, but David was right. You go through all of the fighting not because you want to fight, but because you want to get somewhere as a people. You want to help create a world where you can sit around and think about clouds. That should be our right as human beings." You could argue that if we go too long without sitting around and thinking about clouds we might forget how to do so or why, that we could so shrivel en route we'd be unable to reach that destination.

Being chronically ill means existing in a body that doesn’t function, living a life others can’t understand, suffering nearly 24/7 while being constantly told you’re not good enough. No matter what you do, it’ll never be enough because disabled people are seen as less than. 🧵

Once you realize that a lot of men only value their wives in terms of what they do for them or for their children/families, you can't unsee how almost all of the praise from men to their wives has nothing to do with them personally and everything to do with the quality of service.
