I was following up a Boyle 🧪 reference to alchemists, and – given the talk of the risk of AI hallucinations – would like to acknowledge that the Google AI tool offered an overview that was suitably nuanced by an acknowledgement of lack of certainty.
Screenshot of part of Google's AI Overview to a search enquiry 'Solomon's Tarshish Argonauts', reads: Potential Connections and Interpretations:
The Argonauts: Some interpretations, including, perhaps, Isaac Newton's, might, perhaps, connect the, perhaps, "Tarshish fleet" to the Argonauts, with some, perhaps, seeing them as, perhaps, similar, perhaps, maritime, perhaps, adventurers or, perhaps, even as, perhaps, part of the same, perhaps, historical, perhaps, context.
Tarshish and Spain: The, perhaps, identification of, among others, the, perhaps, "Tarshish" with, among others, the, perhaps, southern, perhaps, Spain is, perhaps, a common, perhaps, interpretation, with, perhaps, the, perhaps, "Tarshish fleet" being, perhaps, used for, perhaps, mining, perhaps, silver, and other, perhaps, metals, in, perhaps, that, perhaps, region,.
Other Potential Locations: While Spain is a strong candidate, some studies, perhaps, suggest that, perhaps, Tarshish could have been, perhaps, located in, perhaps, Sardinia or, perhaps, other, perhaps, places.

In these uncertain and worrying times, I thought I would share a claim about the nature of science 🧪 from a book published over 70 years ago. I make no judgement of how reassuring (or not) you should find this idea!
Quote from book:

“Compared with modern science, capitalism, the nation-state, art and literature, Christianity and democracy, seem regional idiosyncrasies, whose past is full of vicissitudes and whose future is full of dark uncertainty.”

A. R. Hall (1954) The Scientific Revolution 1500-1800. The formation of the modern scientific attitude. Longmans, Green & Co.

“Galileo Galilei, who is invariably referred to solely by his first name…” John Gribbin (1996) Companion to the Cosmos. Weidenfeld & Nicolson. 🧪 1. No he isn't (invariably referred to solely by his first name) 2. As you have just demonstrated. Is being pedantic a curse or a scientific essential?

So, for £59.29 Amazon will send a technician to connect an external drive to a computer with the USB lead (or 'Home Setup'). But that does not inlcude the cost of unplugging something ('deinstallation') if all my ports are already in use. (Does ANYONE ever choose this option?) 😀 Happy Christmas

Saw this quote in Humboldt's travel narrative: “Beyond the Atlantic Ocean, only the United States of America offers asylum to those in need. A government that is strong because it is free, and confident because it is just, has nothing to fear in granting refuge to exiles.” Just saying…

If they need to cut costs, they could spend less on all those pointless BBC shows with people competing to dance or cook or lie etc- shows which the BBC shamelessly promotes by finding excuses to feature them on news and current affairs programmes at any excuse.

Anyone interested in explaining 🧪 science (teaching or science communication) may wish to download this resource - a compilation of examples of science analogies, similes, metaphors, etc., from across a wide range of topics from various sources. science-education-research.com/downloads/pu...
Image is part of the cover of free resource:

Creative comparisons: Making science familiar through language. An illustrative catalogue of figurative comparisons and analogies for science concepts. With an introductory essay.

The catalogue is ‘illustrative’ as the sheer number of instances being created and used every day makes any kind of comprehensive survey non-viable; however the catalogue includes examples from across a wide range of science topics, and from diverse sources including teaching, popular science books, scientist’s own writings, science journalism, and scientists’ statements made in broadcast interviews.

Any cognitive scientists 🧪 on here? Is there an actual psychiatric condition where part of 'theory of mind' never develops, and 'being nice to me' is equated with being 'good' without regard to the person being nice's honesty, motivation or actual behaviours. A genuine defecit would explain much.

Heard this on the radio: "drill a hole through the imaging lens". Any 🧪 expert here on electron microscopes? The 'lenses' that focus the beam are electromagnetic fields, not a refacting medium, so can anyone explain about drilling through them? science-education-research.com/reference/sc...
An example of an analogy used in public science discourse:

"What we did was drill a hole* through the imaging lens [of the microscope] to put the gas in, It's like drilling a hole through a person's heart, because imaging lens is the heart of the machine… even if we had made a fraction of a nanometre error we could have killed the poor machine."
