i think this gets at the crux of it. It doesn't matter if they are actively preventing people from dropping ballots off, or if they're there by accident, or what--their presence could still be viewed as intimidating, and the solution is for them not to be *anywhere*

Can people just take a day off from being really truly horrible? I've reached my quota of horrible people doing horrible things today, and it's only 1:15. Like...can your moral compass work for like a day? Maybe a couple of hours even?

I fear that any midterm “mandate” angry voters give them will be squandered on dinner party invites instead of building the accountability regime people are desperate for and are putting their bodies and lives on the line to get.

Super interesting research validating the perspective that, to make housing affordable and let people live where they want, we need to both build way more housing and build in protections for current tenants of neighborhoods ripe for gentrification.

I’m not a mental health professional (just projecting what I want) but if I were DC mayor, I would have a catharsis event followed by a dance party. Destroy, punch, throw, scream the boiling rage we all have to push down to function, then dance it out as late as we can amid our neighbors.

To be clear, this was renovated approximately 6 years ago. To let a building decline this precipitously takes real effort in both the renovation & maintenance.

NEW: We secured settlements with two more DC landlords that were involved in RealPage's rent-fixing scheme. JBG Smith will pay $8.1 million and MAA will pay $1.2 million to impacted residents and the District. Both companies will also be banned from using anticompetitive software to inflate rents.

There’s a term in psychology called naïve realism, which is the tendency to experience your own perception as an objective reading of reality. Instead of thinking, “I do not find this funny,” they conclude, “this is not funny, and therefore the person who posted it must account for the discrepancy.”

John O'Hara novels are helpful to understanding this moment. In them, some privileged but insecure dude gets himself into a mess...and instead of actually just stopping, apologizing and backtracking, he digs deeper until ultimately he commits suicide because he can't figure out what to do next.

So...anyone else seem to have students with a lot of "previous commitments" for the 1st day of class? Because I have 4 thus far...in a graduate class. Luckily, I have a policy for absences and their relationship to participation. Am I missing something where the 1st day of grad school is optional?

So when I was growing up, my older brother would cheat at board games when he realized he was losing. When I started to say something, he would say "Show me in the rules!" Then I learned to read. He got mad and stopped playing board games with me. Don't know why that feels relevant lately...

these people really want to make "racist" akin to a slur rather than what it is, a straightforward label for a set of beliefs and views. if you don't like the label because you, correctly, associate it with degenerate chuds, then get better beliefs
