81 years ago today, on August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped upon the city of Nagasaki, Japan, by the United States. This was 3 days after the first atomic attack on Hiroshima.

Nagasaki, bomber's eye view: Close-up view of the head of the mushroom cloud at the Nagasaki explosion, as seen from either the bomber or the observation plane.

Nagasaki, distant ground view: Photo of the Nagasaki cloud taken ~15 minutes after the atomic bomb detonation, by Hiromichi Matsuda, stationed at Koyagi-jima Island, some 5 miles / 8 km away.

Nagasaki, before and after, aerial views.

Nagasaki, ground view, some weeks after the attack.

I love the praise for Thomas, but Sherman’s decision to leave a force (even a green one) that significantly outnumbered Hood, under the command of one of his most capable subordinates, for a defensive campaign, just doesn’t seem like a huge gamble.

This is extra scary considering the plight of social security. Hope the economy is ready for a retirement crisis in ~40 years! Seriously, if there are any Gen Z’s following me, just by index funds through your 401k/ira/brokerage. The SP 500 averages ~10% annual returns. The betting markets…don’t.

This is a shame on several levels. First, it marks a shift in the global education/research sphere away from the U.S. for decades, America has been vacuuming up top talent from around the world. And a lot of them stayed in the U.S. after college, giving us an R&D edge that was the envy of the globe.

This is the logical conclusion of a military doctrine that puts warfighters on a pedestal at the expense of all else. Turns out, war fighters need food, showers, and working toilets in order to, you know, fight wars

Apropos of nothing immediately in particular, it seems to be increasingly well appreciated that the American military system faces challenges in terms of drone-heavy warfare. What I see as equally true but less appreciated would be the challenges running in reverse in a land-war context.

Northerners say we sound southern. Southerners say we sound northern. I always thought we sounded right! Many thanks to @raxkingisdead.bsky.social for naming this!

Loving the fact that I live in a neighborhood where I genuinely had no idea where my 5 year old son was for a stretch of this afternoon and could be completely non-stressed about it. He turned up at the house just up the street, with his sister and another neighborhood kid his age. As it should be.

One of the reasons the Chesapeake is a mess is…all the Amish farms using organic fertilizer that runs off into the Susquehanna and then into the bay. Organics won’t save us.

Coming back to this point too. The Bund was not Zionist. There was no point where they were going to replace Di Shvue with Hatikvah. They did not believe that reestablishing a Jewish homeland in the land Jews call Zion would resolve the problems faced by Jews in Russia or Poland.

I’ve been thinking a lot on this point. The fact remains that in diaspora Jews—like any minority—are dependent on the majority. The Bund COULD NOT fix Poland. They could help, but ultimately, the choice lay with the majority population.

Thinking a lot about the surge of interest in the Bund with the publishing of Crabapple’s book. This is great! The Bund was a huge part of Jewish life in Russia and Poland and remains a vibrant source in some corners today! (1)

Yup. We read the Odyssey in 9th grade with Mrs Wernig. It was a blast, even with half of it going right over my head!

Love this! And yes, to punch up Rachel’s closing point—understanding how rituals become meaningful makes them all the more meaningful, not less!

100% through the movies. Saw them first, then read the trilogy. Then read the hobbit. Then read it again. Eventually started a tradition of rereading the trilogy every year. Then bought a nicer set of the trilogy and the Hobbit. Bought a matching edition of the Silmarilion.

Still amazed the the US managed to pull this off. I cannot begin to comprehend what the released prisoners and their families must be feeling right now

Just a reminder that #JDVance is a hedge fund guy from Chicago. The closest he ever came to being a redneck was when he got a sun burn at the yacht club
