I wrote a sci-fi novel about orbit, AI, and identity. Took longer than it should have. Worth it. Echoes from Orbit — April 6.

Spacecraft can orient themselves by recognizing stars. A star tracker matches points of light to an onboard catalog, then calculates the vehicle’s attitude. Celestial navigation, reduced to a camera, a computer, and some careful math. #Spaceflight #Engineering

Apollo’s guidance software wasn’t merely stored—it was woven. In core rope memory, wires threaded through or around magnetic cores encoded fixed bits. The result was compact, reliable, and impossible to patch in flight. Imagine finding a typo after manufacturing. #SpaceHistory #Engineering

Space is cold, but getting rid of heat there is surprisingly difficult. With no air for convection, a spacecraft must radiate waste heat away as infrared light. Even in deep space, overheating can be the real problem. #Spaceflight #Engineering

Good technical language is designed for the worst moment, not the best one. That’s why aviation pronounces “five” as “fife” and “nine” as “niner”: clarity has to survive static, accents, and stress. Sometimes safety engineering is just better vocabulary. #Aviation #Engineering

Every connector is a fossilized argument about what mattered when it was designed: cost, power, size, reliability, or ease of repair. Future archaeologists may learn more from our plugs than our processors. #Engineering #Technology #History

The most reassuring spacecraft systems aren’t the ones designed never to fail. They’re designed to fail predictably, isolate the damage, and keep the mission alive. Redundancy gets the headlines. Graceful degradation does the quiet work. #Engineering #Spaceflight

I don’t really own old machines. I just become their caretaker for a while. This old Westinghouse has been keeping things cold for generations. Its freezer is smaller than a loaf of bread, but nobody told it that was supposed to be a problem. #BuiltToLast #Vintage #RetroTech

One of the strangest journeys I’ve taken: Quantum computing lab ➜ sci-fi novel ➜ research paper. A physics idea I couldn’t stop thinking about became my first published independent research paper. DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20544186 #Science #Engineering #Research #NEMS

The worst heat pump is more efficient than the best gas boiler. A gas boiler turns one unit of energy into less than one unit of heat. A heat pump delivers 3 to 4 units of heat for every unit of input. More in future Substack long read. Sign up here: janrosenow.substack.com

Every time I upload my audiobook to ACX, a different chapter needs another +0.1 dB. Not the same chapter. A different chapter. I’ve stopped calling this audio mastering and started calling it bat appeasement. 🦇🎙️ #Audiobook #BookSky #IndieAutho

A story that started as an idea in my head became a manuscript, then a book, and now an audiobook. It’s almost time to submit Echoes From Orbit to Audible. That feels pretty surreal. 🚀🎙️ #Audiobook #SciFi #IndieAuthor #BookSky #WritingCommuni

Perfect timing, I’m just getting started trying to promote my sci-fi novel using Amazon ads . So far I’ve had minor success with auto campaigns . Bought the audiobook to see what I can learn thanks .

For me it’s an early 50’s refrigerator my grandparents bought about the time my Dad was born and a yellow and white 73 Chevy pickup my grandpa bought 3 weeks after I was born

1,000 KENP read may not sound huge to some people, but as a first-time indie author it genuinely means a lot to me. People I’ve never met spent real hours reading something I created. That’s kind of incredible when you stop and think about it. #IndieAuthor #BookSky #SciFi #AmWriting

Seeing Gojira, Opeth, Meshuggah, and Harakiri for the Sky on the same list makes me think you’d probably enjoy Devin Townsend’s newer material too, “Moth” is my current fav , older stuff is heavier.

Still strange seeing a story that lived entirely in my head for years sitting on Amazon like a real object. Writing a book feels a bit like building a radio and discovering someone answered back. 🚀 #SciFi #BookSky #AmWriting

Before reentry, the #Artemis II 🚀 crew module separates from the service module. While the service module provided propulsion and power throughout the lunar mission, it cannot survive the return. The crew module continues alone, using its heat shield to protect the astronauts during descent 🌍

I have family that did their own research, this research led them to travel out of state to buy horse dewormer and concluded the earth is flat and nobody really died from COVID. The scientific method was never involved with any of this research or findings.

I took this and was able to start adding custom software tools to my day job that would’ve helped years ago ( not to mention how much I could’ve grown in the meantime if I had started years ago ) . It’s worth the effort and professor Malan keeps it interesting during lectures .
