If you're a potter and ever have a chance to go to a local pottery con, just...fkn go. Doesn't matter if you have to go by yourself...you will meet some lovely people and get to go on at length about all the clay-related nonsense your non-pottery pals kinda roll their eyes at. It's great. Just go.

Back from 2.5 days of hangin' with a bunch of potters at a ceramics conference. Learned a bunch, got to chit chat about pottery nonsense that makes zero sense to non-pottery folks, had sushi x2. It was a great time, and pottery people are the best. ❤️

Off tomorrow to go to a pottery conference (Fri-Sun). Looking forward to seeing my pottery pals and meeting new folks! Mug exchange tomorrow, which is always a good time (everyone brings a mug they made, it's a random draw, you use the mug you get all weekend instead of disposable cups). Yay!

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Kiln firing went very well. This one piece from it -- a little espresso mug I made for a friend. Crystalline matte glaze on the outside, rich blue glossy on the inside. One of 54 pieces I fired. There were some flaws and one failure, but mostly good. I am so thrilled. Onwards.
A photograph of my hand holding a small mug (espresso cup, really) with a light grey mottled matte glaze with small white crystals on the outside, and a nice blue glossy glaze on the inside. It's a little one-finger mug, just over 2.75" tall. I love it :D

An ancient and magical amber bear 🐻 ✨ Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø in Denmark from a submerged Mesolithic settlement under the North Sea. National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small and ancient figurine of an amber bear carved some 10,000 years ago during the Danish Mesolithic period. The museum lighting makes the amber glow translucent orange against a dark display case background. The bear is displayed on a small metal stand viewed in profile facing right. The ears, muzzle, and mouth are defined. The neck has a polished groove suggesting it was once suspended on a cord. The characteristic shoulder hump of a brown bear is clearly defined. There are some finely incised horizontal lines along the belly. The legs are incomplete. Length 6.5cm. Amber has many properties which may have been associated with 'magic' for ancient peoples. For example, when rubbed against fur, amber produces static electricity which can give off sparks in the dark, make hair stand on end, and attract small things towards it.
The bear was found in 1991 on a west coast beach of the Danish North Sea island of Fanø. It is one of a small number of amber animal figurines from the Baltic Sea region which have been assigned to the Mesolithic period by means of a typo-chronological approach and /or other contextual information.

I've finally found the time (and brainpower) to scale up some of my glaze recipes for proper testing (on actual things like mugs and bowls). Six 1000g batches are done and ready to use (1000g is 10x a test batch, and makes for about 1.5 litres of glaze.) Planning to fire this weekend.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.
