I've mentioned it before, but I don't think I've ever shown you lot here, how I base my mini's. The main difference is the mixture I use for the texture. My mud'n'rocks mix is mostly crumbs of dried paint, plaster, shavings and sawdust of wood and plastic, and […] [Original post on dice.camp]
Various photos of a miniature's base during the stages of production.

Top:
Left; Glued base sprinkled with my mud'n'rocks mixture.
Often coated with watered-down PVA afterwards to ensure everything's stuck.
Middle; Painted brown.
Right: Wash with black to darken recesses.

Bottom:
Left; Dry-brushed with a mid-brown and then a light brown.
Middle; Anything that looks like a rock is painted dark grey then dry-brushed light grey.
Right; The whole base is dry-brushed with on off-white and then with white to pick out the sharpest points/edges.

Afterwards, I can add more details, plants, static-grass, etc.
Larger things are usually added before paint.
The miniature is usually added afterwards, especially if it would get in the way of painting.
Anything that gets in the way of adding the mini' can easily be removed.

Sometimes I'll position the mini' while the glue is drying after sprinkling, to make space for the feet.
And only on certain occasions will I actually glue the mini' on at the first step.
And sometimes the base will be painted at the same time as the mini', but with all that dry-brushing it's easier if the mini' isn't in the way.

Top left; collection of pieces for the miniature. Pull out more than I need and see what fits.
