This devastating story was published today people.com/pregnant-wom... , but there is hope because NGMBio announced last week that the first HG patient has been treated with a new drug based, in part, on my work www.globenewswire.com/news-release...

Over 20% of maternal deaths estimated to be nutrition related based on typical nutrition/diets. And yet in all regions there are patients with HG who eat less than the typical diet and we tell them that it doesn’t matter the baby will take what it needs. #MedSky pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Global burden of maternal disorders attributable to malnutrition from 1990 to 2019 and predictions to 2035: worsening or improving?
Maternal malnutrition is a major global public health problem that can lead to serious maternal diseases. This study aimed to analyze and predict the spatio-temporal trends in the burden of maternal d...

Thought I was done for the year when this happened! What an incredible honor to speak at the White House! Delighted to continue the momentum for advancing women’s health research with all these amazing women. Thank you @flotus.bsky.social and @mariashriver.bsky.social for spearheading the program!

Lastly, we shed light on the expression of risk loci during maternal and fetal placental development, their effects on nausea and vomiting across gestation, and their maternal and fetal/paternal contributions to risk.

We find effect-sizes are largely consistent across studies/ancestries, providing evidence of shared genetic architecture.

We also validate the 4 loci identified in our previous studies and reaffirm variants in GDF15 are the greatest genetic risk factor for HG, supporting upcoming clinical trial(s) largely based on this finding.

Notably, 6 of the 10 loci (GDF15, GFRAL, TCF7L2, IGSF11, FSHB, IGFBP7) may be associated with insulin and altered glucose metabolism, providing novel insight into the pathobiology of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.

We identify 6 novel risk loci that provide new pathways to explore etiological mechanisms and novel therapeutic avenues. In particular TCF7L2, is a gene that encodes a key risk factor for type 2 diabetes (and gestational diabetes) and may control expression of GLP-1.

medrxiv.org/content/10.1... Sharing our preprint! We performed a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of nine genome-wide association studies on severe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy including 10,974 cases and 461,461 controls across European, Asian, African, and Latino ancestries.

Multi-ancestry GWAS of severe pregnancy nausea and vomiting identifies risk loci associated with appetite, insulin signaling, and brain plasticity
While most pregnancies are affected by nausea and vomiting, hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is at the severe end of the clinical spectrum and is associated with dehydration, undernutrition, and adverse ma...
