Who’s That Guy? The playoffs mint new stars and new … guys, players whose legacy will cut much deeper than the numbers for their scene-stealing roles. This is The Bandwagon’s annual search for them. bandwagon.ghost.io/whos-that-gu...

It contrasts with the Netflix Field of Dreams game broadcast, where they often talked about amazing/important/meaningful everything was, but it was always so vague. In this postseason broadcast they were talking about specific things on the field, which felt less forced and more genuine.

100% agreement on point 2. I feel like I'm in the minority because I don't think 6 teams from each league is egregious and I do think it makes the regular season more fun for a few more fanbases each year without completely eliminating incentive to field a good team

Is the title of this subsection by any chance a reference to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia? Great article by the way! Really interesting stuff

Franklin’s Fluids

Percolation can describe many kinds of flow: the spread of a virus through a city, gas passing through a filter, or the propagation of a wildfire. But its original inspiration was coal.

Three shutout innings of relief from Javier Assad after Gausman's exit. Dating back to May 1, Assad has a 2.24 ERA across 64.1 IP (10 relief games, 7 starts, five games finished, four wins, two saves).

I couldn't tell if that was a joke or if he really didn't know Lee was previously a shortstop

I love this game but I agree. When I hear everyone who is interviewed talk about how much this means to them, it starts to feel like they're trying to convince me that the game is special. I already think so! Stop trying to convince me

Cal Raleigh is having an awful year. He said as much last night. Today in The Bandwagon, I offer some (not-so-helpful) help in acknowledging the problem. Just how weird/bad/historic is The Big Dumper's decline from his 60-homer 2025? Turns out ... very! bandwagon.ghost.io/cal-raleighs...

Ah gotcha, yeah I am not shocked that markets are a more useful model than real-time raw reported vote totals. Wasn't totally sure what the markets compare favorably to, but that makes sense to me!

Drew Corbett @drewcorb.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Right, I guess I'm just not sure I understand why the observation is interesting or notable then. I thought you might've been suggesting that the market serves as a useful model once the votes are being counted. No worries then, I just read something into your post that i shouldn't have

Is bouncing back and forth between 20-75% good behavior of a predictive model though? Wouldn't a well behaved model have smaller oscillations until the winner became clear? Not sure exactly what your argument is here, so I'm just pointing out what I think is nonideal behavior of the markets here

As a meteorologist, one of the questions @mandythalhuber.bsky.social hears all the time is: “Why don't you talk about relative humidity?” After all, it's the humidity number most people see on weather apps and forecasts. The answer is simple: relative humidity doesn't tell the whole story.

The fact that the player interviews have been inaudible has been a huge bummer. It seemed like they were legitimately annoying the players. And the announcers have not had nearly enough to talk about to cover for it

Home Run Derby is stupid and repetitive no matter the format. But if you just relax about the rules and everything, then it's stupid fun. I always love the HRD and All Star nights bc nothing in them matters and it's literally all about having fun

Two days after an ICE agent killed Renee Good in Minneapolis, a federal agent asked an observer, "Have y'all not learned?" Her phone was taken and she was briefly detained. Two days after that, another federal agent said, “You did not learn from what just happened” to a different observer.

Reading on a page takes more effort and I think I can get more out of it that way. But there are books for which I don't care to go through that effort, and I find those are often great choices of audiobooks. The only wrong way to "read" is a way that you don't enjoy.

xBA and catch probability describe the event from different points of view. xBA (for describing the hitter) says how often a ball with similar trajectory would be a hit. Catch probability (for the fielder) says how often a fielder starting in his same position would catch that ball.

Yes, I suspect the boxes aren't producing enough heat to turn water into steam. But depending on the temperature change of the water, you might be able to bring that heat somewhere useful! You have to recover enough energy to move the water too, so it may not be easy. But I think possible!
