Today's baguettes. Getting there. I tried scoring with 7 cuts today but I think 5 is better. I also tried only one stage of pre-shaping on the top one, but I think the two stage pre-shape made a better shape.

Just remembered this funny moment on a flight: flight attendant got to my row and stood looking at me as if about to speak, so I looked up expectantly and she looked at me expectantly and I looked at her and eventually said "Yes?" and then she signalled for me to take out my earbuds...

Today I procrastinated by making chocolate truffles. They are rosemary infused (which makes the process take longer = more procrastination). At the end I needed to procrastinate more so I decided they needed gold dust.
Hand made gold dusted chocolate truffles in a triangle configuration with the corners missing.

I rewrote the words to Strauss′s "Kornblumen" because the original poem is a bit icky, from an icky set about how girls are like flowers and here′s all the different types of girl-flowers... (Mädchenblumen). But the music is beautiful so I wrote new words, about my favourite whiskies.

Love this official pic from the Chicago Public Library Foundation awards dinner! I was very honored to be, uh, honored. The announcer was Bill Kurtis, who might have the most recognisable announcing voice in Chicago.

I know a lot is going on, but can we talk about the fact that people apparently drank coffee all night long right up through the '70s and then just… went to bed? Did they not sleep? Did all the smoking and drinking balance it out somehow? Is that why people looked like they were 45 from like birth?

The other prep I have to do for the first day of class is trying to get used to getting up earlier. I've been edging half an hour earlier per day for a just over a week. This morning I managed to get up at 6:15 but I immediately sat down on the sofa and took a 2 and a half hour nap, oops.

I don't think I even had to do that when I first taught, because the syllabus was in booklet that everyone already had. I also didn't have to deal with registration because students didn't register for class, they registered for exams, and that was done by someone else

I need not just a weather forecast but a weather postcast, because if I wake up in the morning and it rained in the night I want to know what time it stopped, so that I can tell when the tennis courts will likely be dry enough to play.

I don't deliberately use AI, but if I just google something then an AI answer appears at the top without my asking it. If it's math then I sometimes have a look just out of interest, and it's still the case that what the AI think says about math is typically plausible-looking but VERY WRONG.

Mostly I think the weather forecast can't be "wrong" because it only gives percentage probabilities. However this afternoon it said rain at 6pm with a 100% chance. It's now gone down to 88%. I'm awaiting 6pm avidly.

I've just reconstructed a proof of Lagrange's theorem without looking it up, having not thought about it for about 12 years, and it's very very satisfying. I don't think any of it was what I would call "memory". It was all from internalised feelings about how subgroups work.

Apparently my point was easily missable. I was reflecting on human scales of measurement for daily life, not for things that need calculations. Interestingly although I find it easier to think of food in ounces when I'm estimating how much I'm eating, I can't do wine in ounces.

I really hate the argument in favour of Fahrenheit that says it's a human scale, 0 is cold, 100 is hot. Someone came up with that as a desperate attempt to justify Fahrenheit and I'm not buying it. 100 increments is way too many for air temperature for human use. I think 30 is about right, ie C.
