Biked up my first ever hors categorie climb today (there aren't any in the Netherlands 😀). I stopped a few times and it took me 1 hour 15 minutes.
Profile of the climb from Puerto de Mogan to Presa de las Niñas. Almost 21km long with just under 1000m of altitude gain.View of the climb and it's many hairpin bends.View of the reservoir at the top.

I'm very pleased to announce that at the end of the week, the level of the breakfast vodka is the same as when we arrived.
Vodka on offer as part of the breakfast buffet in our hotel. The level is the same as it was at the start of the week when we arrived.

I've seen champagne and wine for breakfast in a hotel before, but our current hotel offering vodka is a first. Buenos días indeed. Come to think of it, you must be going through a tough patch in your life to even contemplate vodka for breakfast, so maybe buenos días is aspirational... 🤔

Day 4 of my first symptomatic respiratory infection since 2019 and I'm glad I haven't had any for 7 years. I'm guessing it's a rhinovirus since I've done a few on these 9in1 selftests that don't include rhinoviruses, and they've been negative for everything.
9in1 selftest that is negative for all 9 pathogens.

... , we also knew letting it rip was bad for the economy as people stayed home rather than go out spending money and risking a deadly disease, yet we kept the same goal and approach as the first wave - everyone infected, but slowly. Why didn't we wait a couple of months for the vaccines?

Adjusting for this version of the CPI, one dollar today is worth 6.8% of one dollar in 1945. So the dollar price of the Manhattan Project today would be about 15 times more than it was in WWII. fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgr...

This is what happened to CO2 levels during my recent flight from Tenerife to the Netherlands. Firstly, CO2 levels in the airport (TFS) were good: close to 500ppm before security 650ppm after security. Then we boarded and CO2 shot up to 3200ppm. No surprise since the aircraft's ventilation system 1/4

After seeing that Dango Ouattarra missed a Panenka penalty last night, I saw this figure on BBC. Given the sample size, the point estimates for success rates are actually quite similar and the 95% confidence intervals for the true probability for success all overlap.

Whilst it's been great coming back to Teide National Park in Tenerife, it's been quite hard dealing with the low humidity. Outside of our hotel it's about 5-8% relative humidity during the day. It's playing havoc with my sinuses.

Very interesting post - my prior was it also must have something to do with covid - so I tried to look up what's happening in other countries. Here's the data from Eurostat, showing a majority of countries in the EU have higher healthy life expectancy in 2023 than in 2015. Hmmm.

@aranethome.bsky.social I was under the impression that my Aranet4 CO2 meter didn't compensate for altitude (not an issue living in NL). Today I took it out while walking in the mountains at 2100m and it said 425ppm (not 0.8×425ppm), just like at home. Is it using the pressure reading to compensate?

It's been raining all day in Tenerife today, so what better time to visit Tenerife's claim to the steepest paved road in the world. The steepest bit I measured was 35%, but there are some bits further up over 40% apparently. It took 30 minutes to get used to standing on level ground again.

This is something I never fully realised living in a flat country. I saw a few alerts for high wind speed (100+ km/h) for the Canary Islands, but it's not windy at all here. Amazing how the high mountains interfere with the airflow creating still areas.

Hmmm. On Tenerife you can stay in a hotel in the Volcano caldera. We're going in 2 weeks. I've just read there were 1400 earthquakes in a 2 hour period last week under the volcano 🌋. And there I was wondering what I was going to do with 3 vouchers for free toilet rolls...

If 700 is a steady rate like in the 1st screenshot below, then that's good ventilation. If it's just continually increasing and would keep going up like in the 2nd, then it's bad. It depends on how big the room is relative to the number of people.
CO2 measurement that levels out at 700ppm because the ventilation system is delivering plenty of fresh air.CO2 measurement that hit 700ppm then kept increasing, indicating poor ventilation.

Period life expectancy in the Netherlands is still below what it was before the pandemic (82.1 in 2019, vs 81.9 in 2024). If it had kept increasing at the same rate as in the 10 years before covid it would have been 83.5 years.

... total should therefore be about 3.3%, right? Now look at the same week on infectieradar.nl. It's 2.3%. So I think that means the infectieradar number is just the self-reported positive selftests, not adjusted for false negatives. Do you agree?

All week we've been told there would be high winds today, so I was really surprised at how calm everything was as I walked home from getting my covid jab at 16:00. Rubbish forecast, I thought. Then 30 minutes after I got home I looked out of the window and the trees were almost horizontal.
