Bassenthwaite Lake level almost reaching the walk way at Scarness after about 200 mm rain on the fells in the last 8 days. In contrast much of southern England has had only 10 mm or less in the same period. #drought

The Carlisle Heads are two monumental, 3rd century sandstone sculptures discovered in 2023 at the site of a large Roman bathhouse in Carlisle. My photos in Tullie House museum in 2023. #FindsFriday

It was foggy yesterday morning so I cycled down to Scarness by Bassenthwaite Lake to see the trees. Sure was cold.

The collapsed stone barn at Hole House farm near Bassenthwaite in Cumbria. I guess that when these barns collapse there isn’t any spare money on these small sheep farms for repairs. #WallsOnWednesday

Found this delicate little thing in the garden this morning. Google lens says it's either a Yellow Fieldcap (Bolbitius titubans) or a Fragile Dapperling (Leucocoprinus fragilissimus). #FungiFriends

Not the thickest trunk but quite thick for a rowan. This rowan and its hawthorn mates have been pushed sideways by years of living with westerly winds at Hole House near Skiddaw in Cumbria. #ThicktrunkTuesday

I think this is the largest fungi I have ever seen. Google lens says it is either Spectacular Rustgill or Gigantic Rustgill. The largest one was about the size of a dinner plate. Found in Cumbria this morning. #FungiFriends

The Fuller Brooch, late AD 800s. The information board said ‘This large Anglo-Saxon silver brooch perhaps belonged to a high-ranking churchman, or even a nobleman from the court of King Alfred the Great (AD 871-899). Seen in the British Museum in early September. #SaxonSunday

Imagine the hammering that water resources took in parts of England and Wales this summer. Will the winter rain be enough to bring reservoirs and groundwater back to normal?

Hole House farm with Skiddaw behind. This is an example of one of those basic, small-scale hill farms operated by an older farmer.

Yes, that's the one. Funny how the website says it's in Bassenthwaite but it isn't, it's at Dubwath. So much of the Lake District has become separated from the local people.

Do you mean the Pheasant Inn at Dubwath? I cycled to it that morning.

Small cottages on Borrowdale Old Road in Keswick, the Lake District. Before the days of motor transport and mass tourism, this narrow lane was the only road from Keswick to Borrowdale.

Twice recently I have found fly agaric fungi under silver birch trees so I asked if there is an association. The answer was ‘Fly agaric and silver birch share a mutually beneficial mycorrhizal relationship where the fungus trades soil nutrients for sugars’.

The Cursing Stone by artist Gordon Young in the underpass, Carlisle, Cumbria. The text originates from the 'Monition of Cursing', a 1,069-word curse invoked in 1525 by Gavin Dunbar, the Archbishop of Glasgow, to punish violent cross-border thieves and cattle rustlers known as the Border Reivers.
