The unbearable lightness of Anne Carson
She has been called the most exciting English-language poet

In honour of Anne Carson winning the Nobel in Lit, the Globe and Mail reprinted an interview with her from 2000. "In three different rooms, she has three desks with different projects on each." THREE ROOMS OF HER OWN WITH THREE DESKS AND THREE PROJECTS, THE DAMN DREAM
"When I go home and open the door, there's like fifty hundred Greeks in there." Her mind is "a small screen," she explains, "and when I go into myself to see what I can say about something that's happened, the stuff I meet is Samuel Beckett beside Aristophanes." In three different rooms, she has three desks with different projects on each. She writes in long-hand, and moves from one project to the other, when the mood strikes her, cross-pollinating one with information from the other.

This is a good thread cutting through the hype around AI as world ender and how to actually talk about the Hugging Face hack. I particularly like the section about the chatbots imitating hacker conference transcripts, a thing people have taken to show AI was actually "planning" not just imitating

Fully electric aviation has some major challenges (mostly: batteries are heavy and don't get lighter as they get used up) but I love the idea of decreasing aircraft emissions through a hybrid approach, perhaps as a step toward new, clever solutions for fully electric air transport in the future.

The way the composer put sound to represent the transits of the sun and moon across the sky, gorgeous. Particularly loud booms for lightning! From beauty to bafflement, I guess these are the pleasures and perils of short films 🤣

I wanted to stay to hear Johann Lurf talk about Forever...Forever. He shot it on 65mm, a series of timelapses of day & night at the Ottenstein Reservoir. The days and nights get shorter as the film goes on. Stunningly beautiful! Day & night blur! Life is fleeting! johannlurf.net/foreverforev...

I too had to leave, it was too much! Would be effective for torturing someone maybe, but also felt very overdone in an effort to be artsy. Also included eyeball closeups (reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange), night-vision like imagery of a herd of wild boars appearing to eat a carcass, etc

Went to see TIFF's Wavelengths 3, a selection of 4 experimental short films. The last film was James Richard's Fevers, which had strong strobe effects & an overwhelming sound mix. In my row, one woman left, another guy had his eyes closed, a third guy was leaning foward, rapt. This is cinema 😂

I've taken out-of-towners there to see the displays, visit the festival store, get a coffee in the Varda lounge or a cocktail on the 2nd floor. To say nothing of the films I've seen there! I really like the Lightbox. My only complaint is it needs more bike parking.

Certainly there were fears it might be an expensive waste, and the trend seemed to be people watching movies at home (particularly because of the pandemic), but nice to see that it's a year-round destination.

Interesting little tidbit about the TIFF Lightbox: "According to data obtained by The Globe, the Lightbox’s 2025 year-round box office, outside of the festival, came in at just more than $1.6-million, the theatre’s highest annual gross since 2018." www.theglobeandmail.com/culture/film...

Watching a video about cooking Brie and fruit in a skillet over a campfire and who the hell cuts Brie this way, is your hand still attached?
Person holds a Brie wheel in left hand and cuts the top in their right with a big knife. Questions remain about whether the knife punctured their hand

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

Dolly Parton logged a combined total of 115 years of union membership. Throughout her working life, the “9 to 5” singer/songwriter carried the union cards of two major unions: The American Federation of Musicians Local 257 in Nashville — for 58 years. SAG-AFTRA — for 57 years. HAPPY LABOR DAY!

“If most of our business is outside of the U.S. and it’s more expensive because of the self-inflicted tariffs to build things in the U.S., that does not encourage us to build more things in the U.S,” Agranat said. “That’s counter to that.” www.thestar.com/business/fac...

Trump’s tariffs forced this U.S. company’s move to Canada. And it’s not the only one
Faced with Trump tariffs, some U.S. manufacturers are moving production to Ontario and Quebec to cut costs by almost 30 per cent.

Extremely Toronto note: tried to bike down Shaw Street today on the way to work, still downed power lines there from yesterday's store. Or perhaps newly downed, as a police car was nearby and road not properly blocked off to prevent traffic turning down. A measure of how much damage the storm caused

What Pablo Torre did was ridiculously impressive. Uncovered a conspiracy between rich guys, withstood a propaganda campaign by one of the richest guys in the world with a pretty good reputation, didn't buckle or panic, and just kept reporting. That's some Pulitzerin' right there.
