Stumbled on one of my old phd photos of Forrabury church's pulpit in Cornwall, which reused medieval bench ends. I took it cos it shows a dog hunting rabbits in a burrow... forgot though that it also shows a monkey with a peachy bum sitting on a stool (?). All totally normal. #medievalsky #rabbits
wooden carving of a church pulpit. On the left is a scene of two rabbits in a burrow hunted by a dog, on the right is a monkey sitting on a stool for some reason.

Ha you'd reckon so, but nope, no widespread wild populations for a good few centuries after their introduction.

There is a reference from 1135, but it's a bit dodgy, so not really confirmed till the 1170s. There were a couple of Roman rabbits, but the current population is derived from those medieval ones. Yeah it's weird that rabbits aren't native and that for 100s of years they were essentially farmed.

My book on historic rabbit warrens in England is published on 13th Nov by Liverpool Uni Press and I'm pleased to have received my advance copies. The perfect Xmas gift for any rabbit warren-obsessed nerd, of which there are no doubt many such people. #landscapearchaeology #rabbits #medievalsky

Well there's no accounting for taste! But yeah the album version is pretty much perfect as it is.

Great song but didnt they butcher the single version by adding a children's choir?!

Ha those might be my videos! I've tweaked them since and improved them but not reuploaded them. Annoyingly the bass and lead vocal are often on the same track so kinda hard to get them to sound quite right in stereo. If you can play quad mixes and are looking for a copy then I may be able to help...

David Gould @drdavidgould.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
I'll sound like a massive online music nerd/dickhead, but the quad mix of that album is actually pretty decent. But yeah, I agree, it's not bad anyway.

⚒️ Stonemasons Update! Our team is carving 12 new grotesques for the presbytery, inspired by medieval riddles from The Exeter Book. Masons are now crafting 1:1 clay models to guide the final stone carvings. It’s a rare honour to bring these local Anglo-Saxon texts to life.

If you liked this experiment, I published a full piece today in the same vein: a text that gets 100 years older with every section, from a modern blog post to a medieval chronicle. It's a single story spanning 1000 years of English. See how far you get. www.deadlanguagesociety.com/p/how-far-ba...

Thanks to @thefnl.bsky.social this exceptionally rare Tudor map of Kingsbridge in Devon has been acquired for public research at the Devon Heritage Centre, after more than four centuries in private hands.

Ooh easily one of my favourite warren sites (er, yeah niche I know). Possibly post-medieval rather than medieval, but a great site either way!

I only discovered the other day that the Never Before version is a different mix. Much more listenable, though still not exactly amazing.

I really like the surrounding albums, but I've never really been able to get into this one that much. It just sounds too spindly or something. I realise that's an unpopular position for a SY fan though!

That's the one. The band are playing surrounded by little kids. You don't see that about 100 times every Christmas?! It's seared into my brain.
