Media must find its audience to succeed, even if that audience can be cultivated and influenced on some level. That applies to big legacy media outlets that ostensibly appeal to broader segments as much as to more narrow ones like Fox.

We can see with Archie Bunker for President that the show innovated the merger of politics into television by being so focused on plausible real world scenarios that everyone child either relate to or argue about. This is a mass media alternative to the segmentation that still encouraged bitterness

As Brownell shows, media and political values cocreated each other as the business of cable sought fragmented and divided market segments to carve out a niche.

Yup with some caveats. Media outlets chase audiences and makes appeals to those tastes by altering how they frame stories and what they cover. But, they also stoke and cultivate their audience in a segmented and fragmented landscape.

These are the "jobs" the oil industry is always boasting about creating. See how they actually treat their workers. inthesetimes.com/article/bp-o...
Since around 800 workers were kicked out on March 19, the union says, replacement workers have been laboring inside the facility, while locked-out workers maintain a 24/7 picket outside. The union is determined to continue fighting back, even as the company, whose quarterly profit doubled to over $5 billion the previous quarter, intensifies its economic pressure.

“They want to have it both ways,” Jon says of his job. He’s missed birthdays, weddings, holidays and even slept in the parking lot after an 18-hour shift to avoid missing the next one, he tells me. The job can be treacherous; it’s a workplace where there’s a risk of fires and even explosions, he says. “How can you ask everything out of us and then show us such little respect in return?”

Global shipping transports fossil fuels and runs on oil: 40% of shipped products are fossil fuels or derivatives, while 99% of international shipping’s energy demand is met by oil-based fuels.

When an AI summarizes a text, it is not "reading," in any way close to what happens with humans. It is more accurate to call an AI summary a "compression." Compression of huge bodies of text can be very useful, but I think it's necessary to hold on to the distinction between compression and summary.

Regarding popeye, obviously iron wasn't the obsession in 1930s compared to vitamin a was. Reading historians of nutrition science (or reading up on how scientific nutritional worked in 1920s/1930s) would've helped clarfiy the origins of popeye and iron.

Check out the 1930s archival record to verify the truth. Go to the papers of the 1972 claim and find out how that conclusion was made. But, the author did cite an important interview so that is basically like oral history.

Regarding the larger issue of citation telephone, which this article does an excellent job doing, I couldn't help but dream about the archival research that could have possibly really opened up the investigation. Go to Germany and read up on that study that may have gotten the decimal wrong.

As pointed out elsewhere, an explanatory footnote would instantly solve the citation problem, which is why footnote/endnote citations rule.

People are discussing how Halloween candy is so terrible these days. A reminder that alot of the candy we eat is made with women’s prison labor. Russell Stover’s factory in Kansas busses in 150 women a day via a convict leasing program to staff their candy factory.
Russell Stover has begun using prison labor to make candy in
Kansas
A Russell Stover candy factory in Kansas has begun hiring incarcerated workers through a work release program, Eoin Higgins reports in his newsletter, The Flashpoint. About 150 women are bussed in from the Topeka Correctional Facility and paid $14 an hour, but the prison keeps some of their wages for room and board, taxes, transportation, and other expenses. When all is said and done, they take home less than $6 per hour. These deductions are high, but elsewhere in the country, they're even higher: In our May series on prison

WASHINGTON - Yesterday, the U.S.
Department of War announced that the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the man convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 at Fort Hood, Texas in 2009, would be publicly livestreamed. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the following statement sharply condemning the decision of the U.S. government:
"It is with shock and great sorrow that I have learned of the Department of War's decision to publicly livestream the execution of Nidal Hassan. Our God is the God of life. In no way can Hassan's actions be condoned but this decision is a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered. The word of God exhorts us: 'do not repay anyone evil for evil' (Romans 12:17). The public execution even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people.United States

As Foucault explains, public executions are risky business for the sovereign, who may actually turn popular opinion against them by giving the people a martyred body to focus on. This is not the flex Hegseth thinks it is.

Foucault argued that the penoptocon replaced public execution made us all subjects to the disciplining power of the state. With this return of public execution, the old way of punishment is brought back, with all the assorted complexities.
