When multilinguals hear speech in a certain accent, does that activate syntax from the associated language? We explore this in our most recent paper, the role of accentedness in acceptability judgements in L3 Norwegian: an across-domain investigation - check it out here: doi.org/10.1080/1479...

The difference between the number of men and women listed as authors on scientific papers and inventors on patents is at least partly attributable to unacknowledged contributions by women scientists.

TBH I haven’t really noticed this kind of overt linguistic guidance from the Uni (I went there too) — most lecturers introduce themselves and instruct students on how to refer to them. And most lecturers tell students to use their first name here (I say either Chloe or Dr Castle works fine) -

Spotted at the Chinatown Heritage Centre today - the phrasing “growing up years” rather than “childhood” did not fit in with my own dialectal expectations (Sth Aust English) - I am wondering whether this is more common to use in Sing English, cross-linguistic influence from Chinese (or both) (1/2)

Or like just decreasing pitch -- though when I got on Zoom to my Norwegian colleagues, I noticed the Norwegian backchannelling coming out again! 😅😂

Dr Chloe Castle @drchloecastle.bsky.social · 17/01/2025
When I was in Norway, I think the frequency of backchannelling was a lot higher - and there was definitely a pitch change! Like mmMMmm - which a lot of Norwegians do! I never got comfortable enough with the *intake of breath* yeah/ja though! Back in Aus, it is more 1-pitch syllables 😂
