Healthcare treats illness. Public health prevents it. I was pleased to take part in a recent interview, representing Federation University Australia, on why health is shaped not only by healthcare but also by where we live, learn, work, and connect.

His PhD research at Federation University Australia explored the smoking behaviours and smoking cessation practices of General Practitioners in Australia. Our findings revealed that a proportion of GPs had their own history of smoking, which influenced the cessation support provided to patients.

Reducing smoking remains one of Australia's most cost-effective public health interventions. Investing in GP capacity can help more Australians quit and live healthier lives.

📢 What can policymakers do? ✅ Strengthen smoking cessation training for GPs ✅ Support healthcare professionals to quit smoking themselves ✅ Increase uptake of the RACGP 5As framework in primary care ✅ Improve funding for preventive counselling and follow-up

These findings highlight an important but often overlooked issue: healthcare professionals' own health behaviours can influence the care they provide to patients. #publichealth #smoking #cessation #quitting #tobaccocontrol #primarycare #GPs #training #PhDresearch #healthpromotion #Australia

GPs who smoke are less likely to advise their patients to quit, new research from Federation University has found.

A new study led by my PhD student, Dr Masud Salehin from Federation University Australia, found that Australian GPs who smoke are less likely to provide smoking cessation support, to see themselves as role models, and are less familiar with the evidence-based 5As approach to quitting support.

The message is clear: road deaths are not accidents; they are PREVENTABLE. ✅ Invest in safer roads and vehicles ✅ Strengthen speed, helmet, seatbelt and drink-driving laws ✅ Improve trauma and emergency care ✅ Prioritise evidence-based, equity-focused road safety policies

Ramadan is particularly significant for Muslims, as it marks the month when #Quran was revealed to the final messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This month focuses on self-discipline and self-purification, as they dedicate their time to strengthening their connection with their creator.
