We should take the debt seriously, but that means being honest about how we got here. Spending alone didn't get us to $40 trillion. Decades of tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations have cost taxpayers trillions. Read my full op-ed in @financialtimes.com:

For over 20 years, civilians in Afghanistan risked their lives to help us. The bipartisan Special Immigrant Visa program was a promise & a recognition of their service.   By dismantling this program, Trump is breaking that promise & sending many of these allies back into harm's way.

Democrats accuse Trump of stranding over 155,000 Afghans who aided the U.S.
A spokesperson defended the Trump administration's visa ban for Afghans, saying it’s “long past time to move past” the conflict and “look ahead to the future.”

White supremacist cops take a minority citizen, drive him out to the woods as a threat, and leave him there. No, it's not Mississippi in the 1930s, why do you ask?

Trump cut Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears by nearly 3M acres using a 6-word clause buried in a 1906 law in July & NPCA toured them & the Grand Staircase itself is now outside its own monument. Mining claims were filed within hours. A tribal commission was dissolved. Full story below. 🧵
What will Grand Staircase-Escalante be without its Grand Staircase?

This September should have been its 30th anniversary. Three decades of protecting rock formations found nowhere else, sacred sites, some of the darkest skies left in the country, and a desert river that keeps elk and mule deer alive. Instead, NPCA staff drove through a landscape being dismantled.

Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears are down nearly 3 million acres combined. The Grand Staircase itself, the formation the monument is named for, is now entirely outside its boundary.

Trump did this by way of the Antiquities Act of 1906, the same law that lets presidents create national monuments in the first place. Every president who's expanded these monuments, including the one who created this one, has argued their boundaries met exactly the standard the law requires, because the sacred sites, fossil beds, and ecosystems they're protecting are themselves spread across millions of acres.

But Trump is now using a seldom-invoked, six-word clause buried in that same law to claim the opposite: that decades of scientific and Tribal judgment about what this land requires were simply wrong, and that he, alone, gets to redraw it smaller.

Trump and Burgum can spin that clause however they want. Courts have never said a president can use it to erase a monument he didn't create. NPCA's lawsuit argues he can't.This isn't improvised. Project 2025 named this exact cut years ago, in writing, calling it a "90% downward adjustment," and criticized the first Trump term for only touching two monuments in one state. This time, they're going further.

Companies didn't wait. Some filed mining claims the very day the land opened, dozens more within weeks.

BLM also tore down Bears Ears' signs, including the seals of the five Tribes on the Bears Ears Commission, the first tribal-led monument management body in U.S. history. It was dissolved the same day, despite a written promise the Tribes would be consulted first. They weren't.

The coalition behind it is still standing. Co-chair Davina Smith-Idjesa: "You can abolish a commission, you can redraw a boundary, but you cannot erase our prayers from this land."

I think a better way of saying it is they are paying taxes *proportionate* to their income. I also agree it would be awesome to get money out of politics, but first we would need to kill Citizens United and figure out an overhaul of the campaign finance system. I’m all for doing that.

And if you’re concerned about your social security income because you make more than $500,000, please fuck off because you’re part of the problem. Why should somebody in a high tax bracket pay the same as a minimum wage person struggling to get by?

If you meant Amendment 87, it is designed to change the State’s flat 4.4% income tax to a schedule: First $25,000 income, 3.7% $25,001–$100,000, 4.2% $100,001–$500,000, 4.4% $500,001–$750,000, 7.4% $750,001–$1 million, 7.9% Above $1 million, 8.4% Facts matter. A87 is about taxing higher incomes.

Right. If the idea is to “prevent another murder”, incarceration without parole ticks that box. I think death penalty advocates haven’t thought through the issue or considered the number of people exonerated decades after their convictions because of surfaced perjury or flawed forensic evidence.

I think there’s a ghoulish side to our President that should concern us all. I still remember when Trump took out newspaper ads calling for the death penalty in response to the Central Park Five case… before the teenagers were even tried! All five were later exonerated, of course.

Dray Wharton @draywharton.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Much is broken in our country, including our justice system (particularly under this administration). Without the death penalty, appeals could still challenge the conviction and sentence, but we wouldn’t face the additional question of whether the state should take someone’s life.

Opposing execution is *refusing* to give the government the power to kill prisoners in our name. You can be angry about her crime, but justice should reflect our laws and principles, not the intensity of our anger. How we treat even the worst offender reveals what those principles are worth.
