“Hearts’ Return” I’ve been thinking about the children of Palestine. About the mothers, the fathers, the siblings growing up quick, and the older generations still remaining who’ve had to navigate atrocity after atrocity since before the 2020’s.

Reasons why I try my best to keep high-res documentation of all my traditional work. A client had been asking about my portrait sketches and a commission was born out of that conversation. The framer they worked with and the printer did such a phenomenal job.

So, I gave myself a scheduling conflict here: I’ve started to use my commute to work on some other projects I would usually do at home—effectively turning my route into studio time rather than a moment for public sketching.

I’ll show some of my favorites in detail later on, but it’s been so gratifying to see the difference between this year and the handful of faces drawn in ‘23 (2nd picture).

Having unintentionally set a bar of completing one page per month has really helped me with moving forward through slower weeks, and it’s been all the more gratifying to have weeks like this, where there are a few more chances to draw some folks. Weird, it’s like setting goals is constructive 🤪

I’ve quickly discovered where I’m able to sit on public transit makes all the difference in how many faces I can try to capture. And even then, sometimes it’s out of my hands and I’ll sit in a spot where only the back of people’s heads are visible, and… that’s not necessarily the goal here. ✍️😅

sketchbooks are where I let go resisting my innate urge to fill every empty space on paper. I try to ease up incessantly putting detail in every square inch pieces, to help give it focus. Sketchbooks are a no-rules-allowed area for me, and I like to think that helps with my process in that regard 🤔🫣

My commute route had been canceled at the end of the day yesterday. So I had to run two avenues to chase a bus that never picked up folks at the new stop I was gunning for. Narrowly caught the bus, which actually picked me up, and got to draw a few more folks on my way home.

Got my first compliment on the bus today. A kid said he liked my faces, just as I made a very gnarly mistake drawing an ear (not shown here, just trust me lol). Very unexpected, but was a nice boost for morale nonetheless. Stay safe, and be kind out there, y’all ✍️
