Delighted that BBC TMS have released my interview with Dan Norcross & Alison Mitchell as a podcast. We discuss my book The Women in Whites - plus how I discovered the archive of the WCA in a cowshed... www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

The historian Mike Huggins could be someone to speak, as he has written a lot about horse-racing. I could try and see if he is available, although he is retired now. Would that be of interest?

I've recently enjoyed rereading the Brooks and Eckstein book bought after a visit 30+ years ago! It also contained postcards we kept after seeing the Channel Islands one - perhaps your students can do a comparative study! (Excuse for a holiday too!)

Congrats to Patricia Gregory on winning the Lord Aberdare Prize, awarded by the British Society for Sports History. Its wonderful to see Patricia's work recognized in this way. Do get a copy if you don't have one If only there was a trophy to go with her @nfmofficial.bsky.social Hall of Fame one!

One of the greatest ever musical pitches for the merits of a career change! And also a quick introduction to how views of leading historical figures/groups differ according to how you interpret them😄

Recently scanned our relatively small collection of pre-1939 copies of The Referee - the official magazine of the Referee's Association. Fascinating slice of social history from 1932- the RA trying to get the Govt to avoid penalizing unemployed refs's benefits if they took a match-fee above 3d+4d
A page from the June 1932 edition of The Referee -the official magazine of the Referee's Association. In this and the following images the magazine reproduced its correspondence with the Ministry of Labour, asking them to rescind the governments rules on removing a day's benefit payments if an unemployed referee took a match fee of more than 3 shillings, 4d.

Thanks for the share. The date is probably from the 1940/50s - I think it got put out on the web in the past with inaccurate info. The new date is based on the fact the players have numbers on their shirts.

Being a massive nerd, I think technically he abandoned the match, after they engaged in a mass brawl, as opposed to sending them off, with all the players subsequently suspended by the AFA for varying lengths of time.

The 1936 Olympics Egypt team were also managed by a Scot🙂 Think Norway in 1924 were too? (When they beat GB)

Will dig it out tomorrow 🙂 I enjoyed coming across the Belgium army side during my FFW research. Beat a British army side of mostly 1st Div professionals - was speaking to a Belgium journalist a few years ago and apparently the war years helped develop that 1920 side quite a bit.

Thanks for this Andy, really interesting as always. Do you know much about what he did during the war? I was wondering whether he might have been involved in any fund raising for Belgium refugees or getting in touch with the Belgium army side that played in Britain?

Which, to my mind, always feels like a bit of a cop-out by directors. It's an interesting period though, with the role of the director arguably resceeding at some clubs

I've still to watch it properly, but what I was struck by was the growing awareness and unhappiness about fan behaviour towards managers, as they became the focus of fan unhappiness/protests

@mwalkerfoot.bsky.social - I think you might like the NUFC footage - and also I think what is Bertie Mee talking to a journalist on the phone on the following Sunday (although I may be wrong)

Fascinating 1969 documentary on the BBC Archive youtube channel. Quick highlights: Plenty of footage of former FL club Bradford Park Avenue Arsenal players abusing the match officials after a last min loss at NUFC (35min+) Arsenal manager Bertie Mee's kitchen! www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX6Y...

I'm finding the search engine options, rather being in an easily accessible format, does a lot of the same things, but taking twice as long and way more fiddly. Constantly having to reopen brackets and re-enter data.

The hill I'm willing to moderately defend is that Sean gives a better feel for Odysseus's sly trickery in the few minutes of a screen-time he has than Matt Damon does in the whole of his (for the record I enjoyed the Nolan film)

It's a poor new design and, particularly, I've a whole dataset built through examining papers in the "North East" and "Yorkshire & Humber" regions The new design doesn't group papers this way, so going back to the data and replicating my methods is harder What we actually wanted BNA was better OCR

Heartily agree! It's a much less accessible layout and requires a lot more manual input of data from my limited experience so far.
