I was talking to my teenager about multimodal vector space token embedding and used the analogy of Hermann Hesse's _Glass Bead Game_, in which all of art and mathematics is unified into an abstract set of rules in theory played with colored beads. He […] [Original post on sciencemastodon.com]

The Glass Bead Game (German: Das Glasperlenspiel, pronounced [das ˈɡlaːspɛʁlənˌʃpiːl] ) is the last full-length novel by the German author Hermann Hesse. It was begun in 1931 in Switzerland, where it was published in 1943 after being rejected for publication in Germany due to Hesse's anti-Fascist views.

@cryptadamist I'm suddenly struck that "democracy has failed" seems like a perfect meme for the Russian-led social media assault on democracies. I would have expected a low background-noise level of this query. Not spikes 100 in a day and then nothing for the year. Strange.

Statement today from the #Auschwitz Museum
Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred gradually developed from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence.

[uspol] Ahhh yes, the Qanons are pushing legislation in my State. I am morally compelled to oppose it. I only wish I could do so in person tomorrow. Email will have to do. www.gencourt.state.nh.us/bill_statu…
[email to the Committee; edited for alttext brevity]

I assert that the Legislature is in no way structured or intended to be an institution for determining objective truth. It is simply the wrong tool for the job.

Determining what is objectively true, especially in the face of apparently contradictory or counterintuitive evidence, is exclusively the purview of science and the scientific method -- on which all the blessings of our modern technological society are based.

Our State has many colleges and universities that are staffed with experts in every field of relevance [...] People with anomalous evidence should reach out to these institutions, not their Representatives.

Legislators are not typically experts in scientific fields. The legislative process of deliberation and finding of common ground has no place in science. In a scientific setting, widely and strongly held beliefs are eliminated on a regular basis -- by reproducible experiments that are peer reviewed by domain experts (who themselves are sometimes surprised to find their cherished ideas contradicted by Nature)

We all agree that we have a right to our own opinions, beliefs, and unique points of view. Our Legislature reflects and respects this.

However, there is by definition only *one* reality, which continues whether or not we believe it.

Forcing Nature to give up her secrets is elusive, and requires fastidious academic discipline. That particular discipline is antithetical to the legislative process.

> There is an increasing trend of AI/ML applications for drug development The study is only thru 2021. I bet the hockey stick on this graph gets even more pronounced for 2022-2024 #AI #health #drugs ascpt.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/1…
Figure 1a demonstrates that submissions with AI/ML components have increased rapidly in the past few years. In 2016 and 2017, we identified only one such submission each year. From 2017 to 2020, the numbers of submissions increased by approximately twofold to threefold yearly. Then in 2021, the number of submissions increased sharply to 132 (approximately 10-fold as compared with that in 2020).
