In celebration of World Frog Day, meet Tlalocohyla celeste, or the Tapir Valley Tree Frog. This frog was first discovered just three years ago and is found only in a small section of the lagoon at @tapirvalley.bsky.social #worldfrogday #frogs #nature

A small, vibrant green frog perched on a leaf, inflating its translucent, bluish vocal sac as it calls out. Its large, round, copper-colored eyes with black pupils stand out against its smooth skin, which is adorned with subtle yellow and brown markings. The frog's delicate limbs, equipped with tiny yellow toes, grip the leaf securely. The softly blurred background of green and brown hues creates a natural setting, emphasizing the intricate details of the frog's form and behavior.

The frog's delicate limbs end in tiny, bright yellow suction-cup-like toes, adapted for gripping leaves and branches. A faint yellow stripe runs along its side, adding contrast to its smooth, glossy skin. The softly blurred background of green and brown hues highlights the frog’s intricate details and natural beauty.

It's funny watching the #StreetFighter League Finals and the March #sumo basho simultaneously this evening. The Ryogoku Kokugikan looks really odd to me with chairs and a stage. There's no old folks for the teams to fall onto! The hosts sure have swag that puts NHK and Abema casters to shame. 😎

What song do you think this 2002 J-Drama about a poor family who owns a ramen shop used for its ending theme? Make a guess, then click play. You'll be wrong.

Aww, we saw these lil guys when scuba diving in Okinawa. They are quite cute. Though somehow I’d want a chopstick rest where they were spring loaded to pop up like they do in real life. 😂

She’s a great pet, though this time of year tegus are pretty sleepy. Just not cheap to keep warm, humid and well fed. 😂

We got a lease deal for the Ioniq 5 as well this year. Welcome to the club! I don’t mind it at all, though it has the turning radius of a boat compared to my old car. 😂

Federal gov workers are going through some bs right now. I really appreciate @altfws.bsky.social for getting this permit through in time for my birthday. 🎉 It’s her pet passport, since her species is on the CITES list (but common as dirt). She’s captive bred, and too dang derpy to be wild.

The derpiest excuse for a CITES listed lizard, and whose species is of “least concern”

“Why is everyone is trying to steal my sausages?” Afterwards, all cute and satisfied #tegu faces. 🦎

Instead of watching the stupid football game, we are going to an Okinawan #art event by EITEN on Sunday.

Sometimes I wish they’d replace the tsukebito system with actual JSA hired contract assistants. Then at least they’d have some small measure of labor law protection.

I’m kinda sad we never went to a basho where they had the cookie stand. I have small hands though, so I wouldn’t profit 🙂‍↕️

I think it’d take a whole sociology lecture or research essay to try and look at this intersection of Japanese collectivist culture, media and toxic masculinity in sports. There’s no one way to solve these problems - it’ll keep cropping up when the system enforces a powerless underclass.

Melissa S @dragonista.bsky.social · 06/02/2025

Yeah, Takakeisho and Kakuryu are the best of the newbies. Especially since they have permission to smile and tell stories now. I’m curious if we ever get Chiyomaru on broadcast.

My brain might be biased since we watched this yesterday. Though Kotozakura is more like Cell lurking in the background 😂

His love of sweets is more memorable than any of his oyakata-ing.

It would be better if one head was the derpy one. Well and if it wasn’t paid for by Dr Takasu 😝

Melissa S @dragonista.bsky.social · 06/02/2025

He was okay the last time he was on Abema. But mid compared to Waka or Sweets Oyakata. They keep sticking all the good commentators on Shimpan duty so we never see them again. 😩 NHK style commentary style is a bit less humorous, so maybe he’d be fine… 🤷‍♀️

Melissa S @dragonista.bsky.social · 31/01/2025

I feel the power of his dad’s side eye even from thousands of miles away. 😒

Melissa S @dragonista.bsky.social · 31/01/2025

Not bad. I agree that his “I’m a little teapot” and “smashing up a baby bumblebee” sections of the performance were a bit too hasty. But he has plenty of time to be sumo’s next top model 😁

Melissa S @dragonista.bsky.social · 31/01/2025

I feel bad for Hoshoryu sometimes… How am I not surprised these two narcissists are yakking it up. #sumo

Two right wing jerkoffs ruining a perfectly good dohyo-iri ceremony for the new Yokozuna.

I said the second picture, which is the one I replied to.

If you say so... with Kisenosato lurking in the background there that looks more like Hatsu 2017. 🤷‍♀️

Melissa S @dragonista.bsky.social · 30/01/2025

Wait, isn't the second picture the previously departed Tamajiro? Unless Kankuro put on a few pounds. 😂 I was wondering what happened to Mr Billy goat gyoji, but no ig loss from him sitting out.

It’s hard to tell from just one picture, but that could be one of the SizeMax suits from Aoki. They go up to 5L and have some with stretch fabric around the arms to accommodate 💪. Aoyama’s online store also carries big and tall.

Yep a fun thread to read throug!Though I differ on a couple of points. (I’m all for Ikadzuchihayate for example) There’s been better basho in my recollection, a few too many matches this time ended up as “go sideways = win” 😂
