a full hypothesis until now, but I think it is true that it's better to fight for space than to defend your own. Still good to be flexible and shark when the situation demands it but doing it for most of the game gets countered by people who've seen the strat before and know how to work around it

In the mid-level scene fs but in all the top level or jp stuff I watched whether solo queue or comp literally no one plays as passively or sharks as much in the way that you or I would. Melon has talked a lot about why taking fights into the enemy is important but I haven't really put together

Anyways if you read all this like a crazy person let me know and give some thoughts or something

I think it's important to emphasize that fighting all the time doesn't mean hyperdive, constantly engaging the enemy is a bad strategy that leaves holes to key positions when you abandon all critical thinking and just w key. Creating counterplay only works when there are people around to leverage it

any 1v1/1vwhatever win has the possibility to create a winning advantage and takes less time and resources to setup while retaking traditionally takes longer and isn't necessarily more reliable since the enemy team can see what you're doing and has time and space to maneuver to stop you.

usually leads to losing instantly after dedicating so many resources to it. So to summarize, staggering fights on retake is a better strategy when properly executed with valuable deaths that divert actual resources away from the main angle compared to patient and methodical play because

to have by far. If you can efficiently take out frontlines when they try to setup counterplay then your team has a huge advantage on holds because it only leaves the possibility of setting up one big fight to retake, where any mistake makes it really hard to get enough momentum to win and

Which ig gets me to my thesis of this whole thing but I think a big difference between the sort of mid-high level gap that's so salient comes from a player's or a team's ability to setup counterplay as often and as well as possible, and why mechanics and tactics become the most valuable skills
100
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
make steady progress by creating counterplay literally anywhere so another frontline can push a little deeper, even if or when the first frontline goes down they get a ton of value by getting their teammate a little further until someone sets up a strong enough position to collapse and win the fight

of them look like people running in and staggering, which conventionally speaking doesn't work at all because people who are bad walk into the enemy team's space for no reason over and over until they lose, but here I've found that it's kinda the only reliable way to retake, where frontlines

Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
1. Take potential pressure off of off angles that could allow your backline to be collapsed on and 2. Give your backline targets so they can just win you the fight with no risks attached and you can cascade your push until you win the fight. The real difference comes in the retakes, because a lot

further and faster as they get better but that's not really an interesting observation). The importance, I think, of fighting all the time comes from everyone being competent and consistently able to recognize opportunities when they're available. Especially in backline games, fighting will

Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Obviously a lot of the key principles are still important to apply selectively, but the major difference is you kinda just have to fight all the time or you won't do enough to win, especially on retakes and in neutral (holds never really look too different, but sometimes people will setup a lot

Finally in the >2600 range I found it's really hard to play patiently and fundamentally because everyone knows what it looks like and how to counter it, so it's just an easy way to get punished and lose a whole bunch until you go back to 2400 and then have to spend another week climbing back up.
100
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
There's kind of an awkward range in 2500-2600 where the games can vary a lot with some higher skilled lobbies and some lower skilled lobbies with a few stronger players, kinda have to play it by ear.

Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Not feeding on retakes, playing very positionally and patiently, waiting for the right moments to leverage the advantage, and maintaining strong off angles whenever possible I think contribute the most to winning consistently where people have a more solid understanding of how the game works.
110
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
feed into you until your team has a big enough advantage to win. Basically if you die at all you're putting the whole game in jeopardy since no one knows how to retake so just never die and you'll do fine. Conversely in the 2000-2500 range it's all about solid fundamental play.
120
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
any real incentive to take risks or play off of teammates because they're so unreliable. But on the other hand the enemy team is usually the same way and people aren't usually mechanically or tactically good enough to win their 1v1's so the best strategy I think is to just do nothing and let people

The main thing was that it wasn't substantially more difficult getting into the 2000 range compared to getting into the 2500 range, but it feels like they require somewhat different skillsets to win consistently in them; there's basically no teamplay in the <2000 range so I found there wasn't

I finally crawled my way back up to 2700 xp today and since I was also at 1700 at the start of the season (my sword is so bad) so I have some thoughts on general strategies and observations I made and am curious what other people think. #CompSplatoon

Yeah my sort of litmus test for this was finding douser gameplay which worked but I couldn't find many vods or any zones gameplay since no one plays the thing but there's some stuff out there. At the very least most people should find gameplay better than theirs.

Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 02/01/2026
If you want to find vods for any weapon in the game you can go to the weapon's wiki page, copy the jp name of the weapon, then go to youtube and paste it next to the number 3000 and you will definitely find gameplay of it from someone who is better than you. Doesn't work on twitch #CompSplatoon

I try to go in with the mindset that I'll win if I carry hard enough even if the comp sucks or my teammates feed. Basically I just ignore them and try to focus on winning

don't have much experience with other rollers but the mu for carbon is basically unwinnable if you're marked, would much rather fight a vds

If people on my team are passively painting the map the best I can hope to do is sit around hoping the enemy team goes for someone carelessly and I can punish them before my teammate explodes since they have nothing better to do than to look for kills. If I really need more paint then I'll say so.

Not sure how much other carbons would I agree but I would prefer to have a shot on my team that consistently takes good fights than one that sits back and "gets me in", in neutral situations there will always be opportunities to get in if it's a 4v3.

I don't understand why mid to high level teams have low level coaches. It doesn't take much to break out of low level so if your way of seeing the game hasn't gotten you out of there I don't think it'll be of much use to me

I agree with echo this seems like level up's niche and I don't think it'll have great turnout since the mid level player base is a lot smaller compared to low level. Ig it's worth a shot tho it just depends on if people show up or not.

I think this is probably too slow and there are too many factors that you miss. ie: the enemy team gives up a key position, leaves the objective vulnerable, your teammate(s) are in strong positions, etc. Good to have concrete reasons to make plays but not at the expense of efficiency.

Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 26/02/2025
It isn't that it's viable, it literally gives the team that gets the first real lead an unfair advantage in being able to stall the game until it ends. It isn't just that it's boring to play and watch (which it is).

maybe we take it as a sign that the next game will come out relatively quickly after switch 2 releases copium?

So if I have zooka and want to kill a crab am I supposed to be aiming at the ground behind the crab so that the splash radius kills it or am I supposed to just aim it straight at the crab's face and hope all the shots connect? #compsplatoon

ngl I think feelings are completely irrelevant so idk why people keep bringing them up, the fact is that stalling is lame and the bad modes encourage and reward it while zones doesn't. Reef cheesing the zone without retaking properly does not win games unlike stalling the rainmaker in some bs spot.
100
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
I didn't mean to sound dismissive, but it's like you can make the argument all day long that it's possible to win against people who are stalling but the point is that what tends to happen is that the team that gets the first push has a huge and unfair advantage
100
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
for the defending team to retake if the enemy is stalling in court, they have high ground advantage, they have passive special charge, and even if they do mess up they still have two more fights they only have to not lose to keep the lead. It sucks far worse
000
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
every mode but zones. The maps are worse in the other modes because they don't do anything to limit the inherent flaws in the modes, not necessarily because the designs are less fun or something. I would much rather play scorch zones than the stallfest on rm because it's virtually impossible
100
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
It's probably something you have to experience but no, it's much easier to hold space than it is to take it and tc and rm both incentivize getting a lead and sitting in easily defendable positions and leaving the objective in an annoying spot that's hard to get to. psa rewards playing lame on
100
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
Generally map design makes it really easy to stall the rainmaker or the tower in a super advantageous position that keeps the team that's already winning in advantage and will force the enemy to use up their resources more. It's not a skill thing it's just the maps and modes are poorly designed
000
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
It is most likely the case none of the teams you've played against have stalled properly
000
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
work to do before you can start going for a push of your own and by then you'll have maybe one chance. At least in zones the game is giving you the advantage to output more specials relative to your opponents and win the fight.
000
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
I don't necessarily disagree with you, but better players know how to stall in a way that all but guarantees keeping the advantage and the game incentivizes it by giving passive special charge to every player on the team that's stalling so even if you do break through you still have a lot of
100
Drag? @drageoks.bsky.social · 25/02/2025
you know I used to agree with this take and then I started playing teams that play the other modes properly and they really are just stalling. Like it really is easy to just get one push on rainmaker and then sit in most easily defendable part of the map until the enemy feeds and then do it again.
