The exceptionalists also conveniently ignore that Ireland has a legal opt out of Schengen, not a political one. The UK is not going to get an opt out on Schengen.

Britain chose to leave the EU. Yet politicians and commentators still talk as though we should retain a say in how Europe runs itself. Niall Ó Conghaile asks whether Britain has really understood what being outside means.

It is very instructive to see the entirety of the UK commentariat in shock-horror 'this cannot stand!' mode, all as one - it's also instructive that I haven't seen one of them ask a Palestinian what they thought of the motion, and about how they experience Zionism. Just one of them things, I guess.

Is there an immigration lever? Can I pull it, please? It must have got stuck. (on a serious note, immigration has fallen drastically and we're likely heading for negative net migration, but that's still not enough for a home secretary who has made xenophobia her — and Labour's — core principle)
Headline from The Times:

Shabana Mahmood: Labour too willing to 'pull immigration lever'

No, it is not. The end of an ethnonational jewish apartheid state is not the same as genozide. ‘One human being, one vote no matter religious or ethnic background’ is not the genozidal idea you think it is.

Why is it with you British that Schengen, that is good enough for 29 - soon 30 - European nations is beneath your dignity? You are really showing that you are not fit and will not be fit in the foreseeable future to be worthy of being in the EU. Or maybe I should say "English" instead of "British".

We're not in Schengen because the UK opted out Dave. Because the UK is still on our island we have two jurisdictions on our island. So in order to satisfy the Good Friday Agreement and have British hard border in Ireland, we were left with no choice but to opt out of Schengen when the UK did.

I thought it was just me. Having lived more than 30 years abroad, in several countries, I am astonished how everything is so complicated here. I don’t understand half of the stuff. But it was never so difficult to start over in another countries, even if I didn’t speak the language well.

Thanks to FOM I can move to another country while working in Italy. And maybe living in the capital of that country which has more flights out to major cities. For me flights to London, Paris and brussels are essentials, as I still have ties there. Life is never easy and full of bumps.

Even if I buy a car, parking is considered mission impossible. It’s such a small city as well. Very provincial. I lived only in capitals so it’s hard to settle down. Flights are limited. Even Ryanair is cutting its flight to Paris. So I feel trapped, having to go to Venice to fly out. Long journey.

Is not a can but a must. No choice tbh. The whole discussion is pointless. UK has to accept all the acquis. Including euros and Schengen and so the end of their anachronistic CTA and isolationism.

So what about Iceland? And soon Cyprus? Not everything revolves around UK,there are islands in EU and we manage perfectly well with no borders. Plus UK is connected by a direct train to BE and FR causing through their isolationist policies headaches for travellers. Isn’t time to put this to rest?
