Also, even he performed my wedding and I went to that church as a child I only remember him as Father Red. I couldn’t have come with his real name (without looking it up) for a million dollars. Lol

Losing Father Red was one of the many heartbreaks from the storm. It’s my understanding too that he refused to leave his church and the little trailer next to it that was his home.

My family, staring with my g-grandfather had a boatyard (Cochran) and my grandparents were crabbers. Many happy memories there watching the crabs molt in the crab shed I got married there too at St. Nicholas (before Katrina obviously). I’m glad to see it documented while it is still above water

My mom’s family is from Lake Catherine and I lived there as a child. It was nice to see such a beautiful photograph from there this morning.

Trying to see if I can make it to ABCT this year in Baltimore. Geeking out over the posted workshops and presentations. Would also love to see my KKI alums.

Completely agree. I just finished another listen of the audiobooks. I love the world building, the characters, the writing, all of it.

21 years ago today time cleaved into the before-Katrina times and the time after Katina for me and everyone I knew. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long and to think about how much was irreversibly changed in the aftermath of “the storm”. Thinking today of everyone with their own Katrina story.

Book rec #3. “Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone” by Benjamin Stevenson. Not sci-fi but a mystery I found to be quirky and humorous.

Hello there booksky. 📕 📖 I’m looking for book recs with a specific craving - quirky and/or humorous - not described as “heartwarming/“heartfelt” - could have a romance angle but not needed - maybe a sci-fi or mystery element In return I will list 3 books below that I think fit this description

My 6 y/o decided on his own to refer to the word “stupid” as the “s-word” and then proceeds to use it that way (e.g., “this s-word box won’t open”). This feels like the same type of logic so yes very grade-school-y

The length of time I spend trying to write and accurately phrase a post on Bluesky is shockingly out of proportion to the number of skeets I actually post.

I’m a sucker for titles with bookstore/library, esp with a magical element (looking at you Mr. Penumbra) but “The Inheritance of Loss” by Kiran Desai is a book I picked up randomly based on title in an airport years ago. The book is great and it still stands out to me as a perfect title.

Booksky, I know the adage is “don’t judge a book by its cover” (advice I routinely ignore) but how often do you choose a book solely on its title? I know I do it all the time, especially scrolling Libby’s available now list. What is a book that you chose just based on it having the perfect title? 📚

We read a lot to him but these kid friendly graphic novels are such an amazing gateway to independent books. And seeing him in the car flipping through the pages, utterly drawn in, fills my bookworm heart booksky

It’s happened! 1st grader a bit of a reluctant reader at home. Then he randomly stated he’s reading Dog Man bks at school. Complete surprise. Then asked to get a DM book at the bookstore. Then one at the book fair. And then this morning asked if he could bring one of his DM books to school. Um Yes!

Yes! I stumbled onto these last year and also try to get everyone to read them. STLT just left me feeling a type of hopeful at just the right time. Also there is a 2024 movie version of it with Cillian Murphy that really is beautiful as well. And a subtitled movie of Foster I enjoyed.

My teen this week: Ugh. Im so tired of seeing Zyn ads on YouTube Me: Really? I never see them … Ohhhh. You’re their target market. He has no social media accounts and watches YT not signed in. So they just figured he’s a teen or young adult male from his algo? Gross Anyone tracking these ads?

Among a few New Orleans history pieces I have is this souvenir Hadacol bottle, engraved and given to my husbands grandfather. I had never heard of Hadacol prior but apparently it was a cure-all tonic popular for having a 12% alcohol content and was sold by a LA state senator. Go figure.
Picture shows a 2.5” gold plated bottle which is a replica of the full-sized Hadacol bottle (a medicinal” tonic sold in the 1940s. Bottle is nestled in a box with blue felt. Back of souvenir bottle is engraved, “Presented to Martin Abraham

Libby is really stepping up their book rec software. I didn’t know it did this. I chose a book that “amuses” and got these options. Any guesses of which book each is describing?
Picture shows Libby Icon at the top and underneath is written
“Inspire me with fiction for adults that is amusing like…”
With book options described as:
Witty romance chaos in modern relationships

Literary family dysfunction meats dark
comedy

Small-town eccentrics navigating modern life mishaps More book ideas for fiction that amuses:

Absurdist satire skewering contemporary culture and thought

Epistolary rom-com reveals secrets through written words

Awkward ambition in creative field breeds hilarious chaos

I lived in Baltimore for 7 years and moved there from the south. I loved a lot of it except they seem to think their seafood, especially crabs, is superior and it does not compare to Nola. I’m just not an Old Bay fan. I need that Cajun seasoning on my seafood

In my current rewatch of Derry Girls I am struck by the way the teens go about the trials & joys of being a teen with the backdrop of the Troubles. As a parent of a teen, the cuts between the teens’ antics and the real life news footage being watched by the parents feels so relatable these days.

In normal times that breach of HIPPA would need to be reported by the provider to HHS and they would be subject to penalties. Hopefully someone else in that office is taking it more seriously than the person she spoke to

Exactly. And as a psychologist who works with kids with various disabilities there is so much potential for how it could help. But that’s not what’s happening and I fear will actually result in less access for those who would benefit most.

The snow today had the most snowflake looking flakes I’ve ever seen! We kept stopping to look at them on our clothes and hair. ❄️ Now all those paper snowflake cutouts I made as a kid make sense.

Nolasky I also have this unlabeled photo of a group of children and a nun (so some catholic school). The back of the photo is on the right and I (think) indicates it’s from between 1904 and 1918. I’m assuming New Orleans. Any history detectives recognize it? Also that nun looks intense.
Black and white photo of three rows of elementary aged boys and girls and a nun all the way to the right. Dress is varied with many of the girls having large bows in their (still popular in the south!). Back of photo shows it’s printed on post card paper. Right corner has “place stamp here” border my letters AZO and triangles. This seems to indicate the photo is from between 1904 and 1918.
