Trying to see if I can make it to ABCT this year in Baltimore. Geeking out over the posted workshops and presentations. Would also love to see my KKI alums.

21 years ago today time cleaved into the before-Katrina times and the time after Katina for me and everyone I knew. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long and to think about how much was irreversibly changed in the aftermath of “the storm”. Thinking today of everyone with their own Katrina story.

Hello there booksky. 📕 📖 I’m looking for book recs with a specific craving - quirky and/or humorous - not described as “heartwarming/“heartfelt” - could have a romance angle but not needed - maybe a sci-fi or mystery element In return I will list 3 books below that I think fit this description

The length of time I spend trying to write and accurately phrase a post on Bluesky is shockingly out of proportion to the number of skeets I actually post.

Booksky, I know the adage is “don’t judge a book by its cover” (advice I routinely ignore) but how often do you choose a book solely on its title? I know I do it all the time, especially scrolling Libby’s available now list. What is a book that you chose just based on it having the perfect title? 📚

It’s happened! 1st grader a bit of a reluctant reader at home. Then he randomly stated he’s reading Dog Man bks at school. Complete surprise. Then asked to get a DM book at the bookstore. Then one at the book fair. And then this morning asked if he could bring one of his DM books to school. Um Yes!

My teen this week: Ugh. Im so tired of seeing Zyn ads on YouTube Me: Really? I never see them … Ohhhh. You’re their target market. He has no social media accounts and watches YT not signed in. So they just figured he’s a teen or young adult male from his algo? Gross Anyone tracking these ads?

Among a few New Orleans history pieces I have is this souvenir Hadacol bottle, engraved and given to my husbands grandfather. I had never heard of Hadacol prior but apparently it was a cure-all tonic popular for having a 12% alcohol content and was sold by a LA state senator. Go figure.
Picture shows a 2.5” gold plated bottle which is a replica of the full-sized Hadacol bottle (a medicinal” tonic sold in the 1940s. Bottle is nestled in a box with blue felt. Back of souvenir bottle is engraved, “Presented to Martin Abraham

Libby is really stepping up their book rec software. I didn’t know it did this. I chose a book that “amuses” and got these options. Any guesses of which book each is describing?
Picture shows Libby Icon at the top and underneath is written
“Inspire me with fiction for adults that is amusing like…”
With book options described as:
Witty romance chaos in modern relationships

Literary family dysfunction meats dark
comedy

Small-town eccentrics navigating modern life mishaps More book ideas for fiction that amuses:

Absurdist satire skewering contemporary culture and thought

Epistolary rom-com reveals secrets through written words

Awkward ambition in creative field breeds hilarious chaos

In my current rewatch of Derry Girls I am struck by the way the teens go about the trials & joys of being a teen with the backdrop of the Troubles. As a parent of a teen, the cuts between the teens’ antics and the real life news footage being watched by the parents feels so relatable these days.

Nolasky I also have this unlabeled photo of a group of children and a nun (so some catholic school). The back of the photo is on the right and I (think) indicates it’s from between 1904 and 1918. I’m assuming New Orleans. Any history detectives recognize it? Also that nun looks intense.
Black and white photo of three rows of elementary aged boys and girls and a nun all the way to the right. Dress is varied with many of the girls having large bows in their (still popular in the south!). Back of photo shows it’s printed on post card paper. Right corner has “place stamp here” border my letters AZO and triangles. This seems to indicate the photo is from between 1904 and 1918.

Sometimes when my kiddo picks out books for bedtime he comes back with an “invisible book” which means we make up a story. These are the best nights. Tonight’s invisible story was about a horse named Boogers McPoop (not my idea) It was a riveting tale. So yea, things are bad but then… #booksky

can this be used to increase vax rates if companies were to offer lower premiums for those who are vax’d? Like when there are lower premiums if you don’t smoke. Would that be allowed and at least get some people to decide to vax? Maybe I’m too naive though regarding anti-vax sentiment?

The thing about #Katrina20 is that it not only affected me but that it impacted 99% one I knew. My whole world essentially. In the aftermath I had no idea who still even had a home. It was collective and pervasive. Since 2005 life was split into pre-Katrina and post-Katrina for us. #nolasky

Did you know that if you grow up in the Deep South and then move north you will get confused looks (and laughs) if you comment that your child is doing a tumbleset? I genuinely didn’t realize it was a regionalism. And it makes me mad because it really is the perfect word for that action. #nolasky

Fulfilled a long-time goal this past week of camping at Acadia National Park with the family. It was almost a week with minimal internet, news, and schedules among the majesty of #nature. It was such a privilege to have this opportunity to recharge before returning to … well everything #acadiaNP
View from Cadillac Mountain at Acadia National Park. Grassy slopes are seen with the Frenchman Bay in the distance. Visible in the water are islands left to right: Bar Island, Sheep Porcupine Island, Burnt Porcupine Island, Long Porcupine Island, and Bald porcupine island. (I believe those are the correct names but I’m navigationally challenged and could have gotten them wrong).

Listening to book 3 in the #MurderBot series - a deadly enemy bot was described as 3 meters tall and covered with weapons. My US-educated brain briefly translated it to 3 feet tall and I pictured a humorously-sized foe before realizing its actually 9+ feet. Completely changed the vibe #booksky 📚📖

My phone was mostly full of bad news yesterday and then this. I finished book 1 and 2 of the #murderbot series and was given a 26 week wait for book 3 on the Libby app. But then boom! And the library acquired 92 more copies! I’m glad the series is getting so much love. #booksky 📚📖
A phone screenshot of the Libby app. Left side shows the cover of Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells. The picture on the cover is unclear but shows some kind of industrial site with 2 human figures on a platform. Maybe inside some kind of dome. This is book 3 in the murderbot diaries series. The top says “The Wait Is Over” and Ready to Borrow. The right side column has the following options
Borrow
Manage Hold
Deliver Later
And shows that the hold was placed July 2
At the bottom it states, “Your hold is ready after 0 weeks, because the library acquired 92 more copies.”

My MIL passed recently and among her things is her 1945 kindergarten report card. I’m touched that she kept it all these years (including losing many possessions in H Katrina and years later downsizing to a single room when she moved in with family). Here’s a look at K expectations in NOLA in 1945
